My 8n, no compression cylinder 2, chapter 2!

Everthing I've done here is in the thread. The only measuring I have on deck to do is the lashing, which I need to find my feelers for (they're somewhere on the workbench) Given I don't have direct access to the top of the valve unless I pull the head, I'm not sure how I can test the valve...

My 8n, no compression cylinder 2, chapter 2!

I absolutely don't have the experience, tools, or skills to cut my own valve seats. I need to make do with what i have, which is to clean up the number 2 exhaust valve so it seals properly (or seals at all). That's really all I can focus on right now.

How do you clear it after and avoid hydrolock? Just leave the plug off and let it squirt all over?

I don't understandhow this would have gotten gunked up. The engine was literally in pieces 12 months ago. Did they just not set the valve back? My understanding is to drop a quarter cup of ATF into the cylinder, crank it a few times to let it coat, and let it sit, yes? Crank it a few more...

Hauled out hte boroscope and took a look at the valve seatings. It looks like the exhaust valve is all crudded up. I wonder if using a brite light in the spark plug hole will let line shine through to see if it's not seating? Anyone see any smoking guns here? In the first video, front of...

My 8n, no compression cylinder 2, chapter 2!

Very small update - i pulled the hood off and just to make sure i wasn't insane, did a compression test again (reaching the plugs under the hood is a pain in the butt). Confirmed my supicions Cyl 1: 95 psi Cyl 2: 2-3 psi Cyl 3: 93 PSI Cyl 4: 94 psi Next I'm going to put the boroscope in there...

I haven't checked the lash yet - I have a gap tool lying around somewhere, but I've never done this before. I need to learn a bit :)

My 8n, no compression cylinder 2, chapter 2!

Okay, I have a bit of an update. After @soaked pointed out the hard to see retaining clip on cylinder #2 intake (the cylinder that was showing very low compression) I took a much closer look at it, this time with a flash. There's a clip there, but it's turned around backward. The question on...

No retaining clip is an interesting find. Though, in that pic it looks like the right hand valve on cylinder two has a cliip, it's just facing backwards? This is an early 8n, in that it has the front mounted distributor, and has the 'old style' steering gear box (the one that's really hard to...

Do you have a pointer to those? Manifold is obviously off now, so easy to get to everthing. I'll also re-do the compression test.

I'll agree with that :). I have a set of feeler gauges and I just watched a little video on it, so I'll walk through to see if the lashings are right. I'd rather exhaust (heh) all the possibilities of the valves misadjusted before I yank the head off.

@HarryVanderpool thanks for the feedback. What's funny is... In theory this entire engine was rebuilt, re-sleeved, and re-valved a year ago. I think the shop that was working on it was sort of sloppy, and I'mw ondering if the kids who put this together (the guy who owns the shop is quite...

I am a very do it yourself small time mechanic. I have very few tools other than the basic ratchet and drivers. This is almost certainly beyond me.

My 8n, no compression cylinder 2, chapter 2!

Folks may remember my post from earlier this year about problems with cylinder 2 firing. I ended up getting a compression test kit, socketed it into that cylinder, and lo, almost no compression (like, 10psi). Wahhhh. The other cylinders were in the 80-90 range. My first guess here was a...
