    Not just birch! Cabinet grade plywood in general has very thin outer ply, be it birch, oak, maple or whatever. It is a better move to strip first, then lightly sand. Even then, do it carefully.

    I was back in the early 60's

    It is water contaminated with gypsum, a major component of drywall. Tastes terrible. We have huge deposits in the area. Two drywall manufacturers have facilities on the outskirts of Sweetwater, Tx. And mine the gypsum on-site.
