Ok. Was going to add “Fixed” or some such. Thanks.

Need opinion, Ford 841 new solenoid may be bad.

Trying to wrap up all of my threads on the 841. Finally replaced, rewired, re-everythinged until figured out prime conductor insulator, points, rotor, and condenser on new distributor were the problem. I think it started with the insulator, but the rotor fell anpart, too. Installed electronic...

Ford Powermaster 801 - trying to get running. Gasoline, 1957-58, electrical / ignition mainly.

Ah. I didn’t catch that about point gap, I read it in my head as spark plug gap.

Ford Powermaster 801 - trying to get running. Gasoline, 1957-58, electrical / ignition mainly.

I did install new Autolite 437 plugs and gapped them to 0.035. Didn’t reuse old ones just wanted to see what they were gapped to.

Something I’d forgotten to add; I did not know the aftermarket distributors have smaller holes for the insulator / prime conductor than stock distributors. Probably a contributor to the failure of the insulator. It is 1/4” and the conductor/screw 3/16-ish so not much insulation. The silicon...

Ford Powermaster 801 - trying to get running. Gasoline, 1957-58, electrical / ignition mainly.

I don’t remember. I had read 0.025 for 6v points, 0.035 for 12v points, 0.045 for 12v points. The o.025 is Ford spec, I thought the 0.035 was also Ford spec on 12v factory. I will have to check and see if the 0.045 was on the EI manufacturer’s site. Was not Pertronix. I bought a pair of gapping...

Ford Powermaster 801 - trying to get running. Gasoline, 1957-58, electrical / ignition mainly.

Update May 31, 2026 After having trouble on and off 841 finally quit running much at all, acting again like carb was plugging or something. Long (9-month) story short: I installed a new gas tank bc so much rust in it; figured out solenoid/relay/starter and alternator/coil were wired like an 800...

Need opinion, Ford 841 new solenoid may be bad.

Let's see what's next on down the line..... "Sis Boom Baa!" THat's the sound the tractor makes trying to run. Figured out wiring, coil, etc. Found some bad connections and ignition spade terminal was holding on by two strands and broke in my hand. Not sure how I managed to get this thing...

Same news. Tried other condenser but both are bad or auto-ranging meter isn’t reading right.

Big fat goose egg on meter when checking the condenser. Now going for old distributor’s condenser. Fingers crossed.

Haven’t made it to tractor today. Watched vids last night and read on how to check condensers. The two-terminaled (hot and switched) dielectric thing the wires bolt to under the instrument panel. Soldier didn’t have to pay his money for it! Lol. I’d be more like Richard Pryor, I have a big 357.

Need opinion, Ford 841 new solenoid may be bad.

Actually, found the box with the old distributor and had forgotten that I installed an electronic ignition right after I got the tractor and it ran on that for a year, but the new coil states not for use on electronic ignition. And I found the new power block I had bought last year in the...

Need opinion, Ford 841 new solenoid may be bad.

Starter button is good. Solenoid not sticking now. No battery drain either now with alternator harness loose. Got it to start “better” after I cleaned the carb, some residual rust powder, but still won’t stay running. This tractor is first points ignition I’ve really worked on. We switched...

Safety start switch meters good and operated correctly.

“Does this mean the starter and solenoid DO NOT work properly with the alternator hook up correctly??” Yes, solenoid would engage / stay engaged when harness is plugged in to 1&2 terminals on alternator. The only thing different I did today when I reinstalled and wired solenoid is to unplug the...
