    Yes that is what I have been told. I will talk to some of the local horse people and see what they like. I worked on a farm growing up as a kid so I know enough to get myself into trouble. Let me know if you know of any decent used haying equipment for sale. Thanks for the info

    Engine knock?

    I really haven't put it under a load. I have only started it twice since I bought it and it was about 25 degrees each time. It did start hard but with no glow plugs or block heater I would expect this? You hit it on the head with "hammer on acceleration". Thats exactly what it does.

    The previous owner that I bought it from didn't overhaul it and being a former State DOT tractor I doubt they overhauled it. You only here the noise when you hit the throttle and it is "reving" up. At a consistent idel it is quiet. If it was a bearing or something wouldn't it knock all the time?

    You only hear the noise when you give it fuel. When the engine is running at any rpm it is quiet. I noticed it when I would hit the throttle. The previous owner said the noise is just how these particular ford diesel engines sound?

    I bought a Ford 540A 3 cylinder diesel tractor. When the engine is throttled up there is a knocking sound. Only when it is given fuel though. It sounds fine other than that and there is no smoke and it runs great. I wrote the sound off to your typical diesel noise. Is that a good assumption?
