What's up with the silver paint vs original color on the rear wheels of otherwise nicely restored Ford tractors? Collectors, please weigh in.

Yes indeed, I've learned from this thread and extensive research that the period correct judgeable finish would be cadmium or zinc plating. While having mine plated is tempting, a judgeable restoration was never my target. The reason I started this thread was to find out what was considered...

I had a lot of good original paint on the underside of the sheet metal to use as a guide for mixing the correct gray. I was surprised to see the pallet of toners it takes to make the correct color of gray. It's no wonder there are no over-the-counter grays that even come close. You certainly...

Those big wheels have been on there for so long now they look normal to me. If enough people chew me out, I'll get busy and paint the correct ones. I know... I still need to find an original seat assembly. Anybody got one?

I'm still here. I wake up most mornings saying this will be the day I tackle the job of sanding the the gloss off both sets of wheels and painting them silver yet they sit in the barn untouched at the end of each day. I just dread sanding wheels. It's all hand work. Meanwhile the Jubilee is...

Hey showcrop, Thanks for participating and helping to convince me that I need to keep looking for empirical proof that the wheels were silver when I was still believing they were grey. Yep, now I can move on to repainting 6 freshly painted rims from various shades of ford greys to silver...

There was no "spelling mistake." The AI used the word strawberry, with three r's, multiple times in its replies, even including spelling the word out, CORRECTLY, one letter per line as such: Give it a minute. Nobody envisioned the Enola Gay when the Kitty Hawk was in the headlines.

The jury is in. The reason people paint their rims silver rather than grey is because Ford never painted them. I was wrong right from the start on this. I found a post from another member (Tim PloughNman Daley) who said they used both cadmium and zinc plating and that the manufacturer...

Hey Destroked 450, Thanks again for contributing more info. A lot of people have said they are sure the rims were silver/cadmium plated. Your brother's experience and recollection are the most compelling testimony to date. I was skeptical to believe opinions for good reason. My opinion was that...

If you ask the AI yourself, you will learn your brother was pulling your leg. He'd get a big kick out the fact that you repeated his spin of yarn. In fact, ask any AI, especially MicroSoft's competitors, who would love to be able to discredit it, they will convince you that while large language...

I'm sure he didn't know about the disconnect lever. I didn't know about it either when I first met him and looked at the tractor. I read about it a few months later which got me to thinking that maybe there was nothing major wrong with the tractor. He told me he bought it in unknown running...

Hey Destroked 450, Thanks for weighing in on this. If you can find original color pictures from the 60's of tractors your family members bought new it would be the most compelling evidence I've been able to find on the subject. That 881 is beautiful. I had an opportunity a year ago to buy a '62...

Wow, she's a beauty. I'll post pics of mine soon. I'm done with everything but the rear wheels and the seat. I can't bring myself to upload pics until I get these last two things done because it's currently wearing 16.9 -30's and an aftermarket seat. It looks a little goofy with those big tires...
