1950 John Deere A chattering noise

Had the same thing on my A. The springs that push the disks apart when the clutch is released were too short/weak, letting the disks drag. New ones eliminated the chattering.

    John Deere a Live pump

I completely removed the steering shaft/worm gear. The sector gear and shaft were left in place in the front pedestal as a center "idler" for the tie rods. I mounted the steering wheel and steering motor from the combine on the support above the gear shift quadrant. The steering valve is...

    John Deere a Live pump

If your A is a late one the 60 gov. housing and pump will fit. I have one on my "51 A and it works great. The support for the gas tank/hood has to be made to fit but that was no problem. I also fitted my A, which has a wide front, with the hydrostatic power steering from a 95 square back...

    External hydraulic system

I put the governor housing and hyd. pump from a "60" on my late "A". The support for the gas tank has to be re-done but that"s no big deal. I have a New Idea all hydraulic loader on it and have an external oil tank mounted on the loader frame. A two spool valve is mounted left of the steering...

Someone school me on 730 diesels

The transfer pump keeps enough pressure to push fuel through the filters and to the rack and injector pumps. The pumps, one for each cylinder, are actuated by the cam shaft at the proper time and send a regulated amount of fuel under great pressure to the corresponding injector. Very simple and...

Someone school me on 730 diesels

The transfer pump is located on the right (pulley side) end of the governor housing. It"ll have a fuel line coming TO IT from the sediment bowl and a fuel line FROM IT going to the fuel filters.

John Deere A Issue - Not running 100%

Had the same thing with my "48 A. Turned out to be debris in the fuel tank that would allow limited fuel to flow. It got plenty of fuel for light work around the yard but if it had to pull a load of hay up a hill, it"d stumble.

Just reverse the procedure. As you tighten it down, make sure the ram doesn"t bind in the hole it goes through in the frame or it won"t retract and let the latch catch. That"s about it.

    JD 55 combine engine swap

I have a #55 round back with a very good 217 engine but the machine itself is about used up. I have a chance to get a #55 square back with a bad engine (303..?) but the machine is in good shape. Does anybody know if my 217 will bolt up to the bell housing from the 303? Or, could I use the bell...

    Changing trans/hyd oil on 4020

David G, Thanks. Yes, I planned on doing that, now will be the time. The screen is no doubt dirty. I"ve had the tractor for a good many years and have not had the screen out. I have changed the filter regularly however. Ted K
