    1948 C Engine rebuild - sleeve / O ring issue

The spec in the book is .007-.017 for piston ring gap. I got piston rings for the 3.4375 bore. #1 cylinder ring gap was >.017 entire piston travel, the other three cylinders were at .008 to .010 at most. For the trouble and expense that this rebuild is, I want similar compression numbers for...

    1948 C Engine rebuild - sleeve / O ring issue

An overhaul of the engine by previous owner put 3.4375 overbore sleeves and pistons in the engine. With new piston rings, I found #1 piston ring gap too big, got a replacement sleeve, pulled the rest of the sleeves to clean out the water jacket. Got new O rings for the sleeves. Long story...

Is there an easier way to install the PTO shaft?

The devil is always in the details : if the backlash is out of spec after you have installed the PTO shaft, it has to come back out and now the pinion pulley gear has to be shimmed to bring the gears closer together ( per the service manual ).

Is there an easier way to install the PTO shaft?

I'm replacing a damaged PTO shaft on a '49 A/C model C. It's a 1 1/8in PTO shaft. The tractor is split already b/c it's getting new main drive shaft and trans input shaft. This PTO shaft got cut shorter for reasons unknown and the splines are damaged, which makes the overrun coupler loose...

Rebuilding 52 8n Main Bearing Question

I pulled everything apart again. VERY faintly stamped into the back of the new bearings is .020, some not legible unless you know what it is supposed to indicate, not surprised I missed it. When I started the install, I put the new bearing shells in place with finger tight bolts and stuck...

Rebuilding 52 8n Main Bearing Question

I'm having a similar problem : I need some advice from you engine rebuilders : I'm overhauling a '48 CE engine in a Allis model C. An engine knock ( among other issues ) prompted the project. The crankshaft was scored on all the journals, bearings were showing copper all over the place. I...

'39 model B crank shaft wick

There must have been a tool at the factory to get the wick into the crankshaft quickly. I used needle nosed pliers and an ice pick older than the tractor. It can be done. Took me over an hour. Soaked it in motor oil first. That wick is packed in TIGHT. I'll trim the back end when I'm...

    changing a pto shaft in a c, go from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8

Here's a picture of what I'm dealing with currently. The splines are so far gone the overrun clutch wobbles way too much on the PTO shaft. It appears that the shaft has been cut shorter, probably making the wobble even worse. The hydraulic pump unit is there on the left. Because I've gone to...

    changing a pto shaft in a c, go from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8

I'm glad this topic was covered - the '49 A/C C in the garage has a pretty chewed up rear PTO shaft that is breaking the roll pins on the ORCs. I have a brush hog I still want to use, but it's too risky with the PTO splines so damaged. The hydraulics work, so I need a replacement with the cams.

    Allis C camshaft swap

I'm changing out the trans main shaft on my '49 A/C model C. You can see from the picture I posted above that the main shaft splines have been destroyed, so I am also replacing the clutch shaft with splined sleeve with good used. The issue I have is about the rear bearing assy on the trans...

    Allis C camshaft swap

I'd be concerned about accidentally dumping the clutch and shearing that bolt. Looks like you drilled the hole a little larger and put a jam nut on it. Since I have everything apart in the garage, I'm going to replace the clutch drive shaft and transmission drive shaft, so that they lock...

    Allis C camshaft swap

In case anyone's interested, here's what the crankshaft looked like before the machine shop. All the journals were like that. The tappets are problematic - that pitting makes me want to toss them. The valve spring caps were rusty, and cleaned up okay. There were rubber oil seals on the...

    Allis C camshaft swap

The engine's on an engine stand, the cylinder head is off. The crankshaft is scored on every journal, the bearings for the middle and front mains are half copper, half gray babbit, all of them peppered with black specks. #3 connecting rod journal bearing is by far the worst, probably where the...

    Allis C camshaft swap

My Dad was running it with an external coil bolted to the front end weight on the right side of the engine. Don't ask. I got a rebuilt magneto and replaced that odd setup.

    Allis C camshaft swap

I am troubleshooting an engine knock on a '49 Allis C. ( It also won't start when it's hot - I have to wait for the engine to cool down to restart it ) I inherited the tractor from my Dad. Back in 2017 he told me the engine had been rebuilt, but he did not say when or give any details. I went...
