hot solenoid = bad starter ?

Sorry - it's a '51 8N, 12v. New solenoid, I can turn the motor over with a crank, so it's not locked up. I suspect the starter as it was pretty funky in there a couple of years ago when I had a peek inside. It's been firing right up and running great, then it'll be deader 'n a hammer. New...

    Yikes ! Wiring

The ceramic ballast resistor is right there on the engine block. I can see the two mounting holes in the firewall where the terminal block was, or where it would go. We're never quite sure what the PO was up to, as the light switch that was in it had a piece of copper tubing jammed into it where...

    Yikes ! Wiring

I tested everything out and I think I fried the new solenoid on my previous incorrect wiring attempt. I got another new solenoid, this time, one that was exactly like the original, not one the parts store guy said " would work." Tractor runs great. Fired right up. Drove it around for 5 minutes...

    Yikes ! Wiring

Thanks all - I failed to see the lead from the key switch that connects to the bottom wire of the ballast resistor. It is wired correctly now but the patient is unresponsive. I will search these posts for a " chase down the wiring problem " post. I used the wiring diagram with the "delete" over...

    Yikes ! Wiring

I've wired my 51 8N both ways that I've seen in diagrams and both times the yellow wire from the key starter gets hot and smokes. What gives ? Do I really need the terminal block or can I just go to one side of the ammeter like one of our advisors advises ? I've tried like the diagram with...

    Re: PO ?paint job?

Thank you all so much for the input. Flat, Latex ( ish ) for sure, and I thought it looked like it had a touch of drywall texture in it, too. What ever it is, it is an odd choice, and this is undoubtedly the same PO who jammed a piece of copper tubing in the light switch where the fuse should...

Broke the tiny radiator overflow tube loose from neck

You re the nicest guy in the world !! Thank you so much for the encouragement. I ll read the other posts about how to clean it and what kind of solder. I thought I was really doing great using the come along to get the hood off using a strap over the rafter. It worked fine the first time. You...

Broke the tiny radiator overflow tube loose from neck

Oh brother. I broke the tiny little overflow spout from the neck of the radiator while I was lifting the hood of my 8N off by myself. Is it possible to JB weld this back in place ? I m great at sculpture haven t soldered much. This is a brand new radiator. AARRGGGG

    PO ?paint job?

Please support Texas HB 8N requiring paint guns to be licensed and requiring a 40 hour course before the purchase of a paint sprayer. PREVENT TRAGEDIES LIKE THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. Remember......?If you can?t spray something nice.....don?t spray anything at all.?

    Accidentally took the starter apart.

Very interesting reading. Who would expect it to self destruct when you take it off ? I would never have guessed had I not seen it in 75 tips. Usually you can take a starter off of something without it ruining your day - or life. I have one bad tooth on my flywheel on my 46 Farmall B and once in...

    Water pump cover plate

I think I can start putting it all back together again. You all are really kind to take the time to enlighten me. My other tractor that I use all the time is a '46 Farmall B, so it will be nice to have a 3 point for some things around here.

    Water pump cover plate

HFJ - I got a new light switch. The new one is closed up and doesn t have a place for a fuse so I put an in-line fuse on it. I saved the old switch with the piece of copper tubing in place of the fuse for posterity.....it s a bit of a masterpiece.
