    separating two cast pieces

    Can you arrange the pump such that one of the two parts you're trying to separate is supported on something solid, then strike the other part with a dead-blow hammer in order to create a shearing motion? Or are there locating pins or other parts in the way?

    I get spiders about that size (maybe slightly longer legspan) in my shop, though I haven't seen one in a couple of months. I leave spiders alone outside or in the shop. In the house, also -- unless my wife sees one and insists on me dispatching it.

    That type of pliers works well. I've used them with good results when other tools have failed.

    I've had good luck with Dawn or Palmolive dish detergents -- I'll use those before I resort to Purple Power or the like. I've had painted surfaces damaged by (undiluted) Purple Power, but dish detergent doesn't present this risk.

    What's your favorite remover for hardened gunk?

    Depending on the type of surface below the gunk, and on what you intend to do to that surface... I've had fairly good results with a wire brush in a drill or angle grinder. Not such a good idea if you're trying to preserve paint, but on bare steel or on parts you intend to paint, it can help...

    I'll occasionally flip my welding helmet up, forget it's still on my head, and catch the lip of the helmet on something I've ducked under or bent over. No harm done, but it startles the heck out of me for the half-second it takes to realize what just happened... Or, I'll pick up a sheet metal...

    Compressor lube?

    I've used Craftsman and C-H compressor oil in the past. I recently switched to Amsoil. The compressor runs slightly but noticeably cooler (using the calibrated hand test), but it's not a big difference. I've still not decided if it was worth the extra expense.
