How close have you come to burning your house?

That's about the same as it cost me for a comparable furnace at my last house (in western Wisconsin).

That furnace looks pretty old...80s vintage perhaps, and no more than 80% efficient. I'd do the same thing as you said and just replace it. Most new furnaces run 92-95% efficient, should notice a little drop in gas usage, but the peace of mind is worth more than anything.

    TVNOWPRO

Depends on how far you are from the TV stations. It IS made for local channels, but its advertised range is 30 miles, and up to 50 with the amplifier. Also, it's an indoor antenna, so many things can affect how it works, i.e. aluminum siding, steel roofing, foil faced insulation, etc.

    Fumbling the Future.....

In response to the Sinclair, if it's the same one I learned on (OK, kinda learned on), it was made by Timex, or at least had the brand name on it. It had all of 2 kilobytes of RAM, 3 1/4 MHz CPU, the membrane keyboard(worthless), and wasn't any bigger than a desktop calculator...and about as...

    Strange diesel problem 3500 Dodge

Perhaps the Fuel solenoid (assuming it has one...if so, is failing, heats up and quits working 'til it cools off a little).

    OT 1971 Ford C6 Trans

If you're in Manual 2nd, it will NOT downshift into 1st (unless you downshift manually). If it's in Drive, it should downshift automatically when you're going slow enough, and/or floorboarding the gas pedal...assuming the kickdown linkage is attached and is adjusted right. The vacuum...

    The root cellar

Neat! Must have a low water table for that not to flood. Always found things like this from the old days quite interesting.

HEHE. Either that, or one of 'em has a Deere, and the other has anything but Deere.

    Stumped! Clothes Dryer not working!

I'll second and third on what a couple of others said regarding the thermal fuse. They are known to fail for a couple of reasons: like another mentioned, a clogged vent; and/or running the temp on "high" for too long a cycle or with too few items in dryer. (The "medium" or lower settings are...

    New roof on old house

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it has to do with sewer gas more than anything. Kinda dumb I know, as that would be the first indication of a flange leak. Another thought might be is that in the event of an overflow, it would keep the water from getting beneath the toilet...but the counter to...

    New roof on old house

I must have gotten real lucky on the IKOs I used. Googled some pics of those and some of 'em look almost identical to the Certainteeds when they fail. Guess I won't be buying that brand now, either. Appreciate the heads-up.

    New roof on old house

This reminds me of what a co-worker told me...and NO, it's not a joke. Some odd years ago he stripped a roof...had so many layers on it, didn't know for sure the exact number, but where the chimney came through, he measured from the sheathing (after finally stripping all the shingles) to where...

    New roof on old house

I doubt you'll have any issues with a standard roofover, as long as the old shingles aren't cupped or curled. I've seen it done on houses that were over 150 years old on the original sheathing, so I wouldn't worry about that. Just get a good roofer who knows what he's doing, use good shingles...

    Today's funny

Question: what years are these trucks? With the 4.0 sohc which came out in either '96 or '97, it took around 5 years before Ford came up with cassettes that actually held up (around 2002 IIRC) along with a new design hydraulic tensioner AND an oil passage flow restrictor. With the 5.4 w/cam...
