John Deere Model M steers to the right after front end work

Follow-up on this thread. Realigned the front with zero toe in using a straight edge to measure distance from garage floor to the center line of axle stubs for a little added accuracy. Drove it yesterday on the pavement in front of my cabin up in the Arizona mountains and it tracked just fine...

John Deere Model M steers to the right after front end work

Thank you. Repacked the bearings when I bought the tractor, and had the front up in the air while working on it. Run-out on the wheels is good, bearings are just right, tire pressure the same. My bet is that I had the 'box in a sweet spot before widening the axle. Now I have to find where that...

John Deere Model M steers to the right after front end work

Axle length is the same on both sides, set with the clamps through the holes on top of the adjustable axle. I have not tried to take up the slop in the box..... good suggestion, although steering wheel slop is less than 1". Not too bad. I am not concerned about the indents on the tie rods as...

I hope MMan can help out also. Lots of good advice from him in the past.

John Deere Model M steers to the right after front end work

Toe in measured from the center rib on the front tires. Measured through the center line of each wheel. Easy to do and accurate, I will try to reduce the toe in and see if it makes a difference, although I doubt it will. The shop manual I have says 1/2" is correct. Thanks for the replies. Away...

John Deere Model M steers to the right after front end work

Been a while since I posted on the forum. 1949 Model M with adjustable front axle. I moved the tubular axle out to widen the front, which IMHO looks better and drives better. Now the tractor steers to the right. I have aligned the front using a straight edge to get the front wheels straight...

Need a little help with brake shoe direction - 1952 Case VAI

The brake drum on both sides turn CCW. So, apparently, I have it correct with the adjustment plate in the rear position. Still struggling to get the brake drum nut off on the right side as I have good used drum and the one that is on there is rusted beyond repair. Penetrating oil and heat...

Need a little help with brake shoe direction - 1952 Case VAI

Based on the condition of the (used) shoes, there is much more than 1/4" of contact area.

Need a little help with brake shoe direction - 1952 Case VAI

Agreed. Not much contact area and not much braking without really jamming on the brakes. Now I have to refurbish the right side from a pile of parts I bought. Once both are working, braking should be fine.

Need a little help with brake shoe direction - 1952 Case VAI

Picture above is the correct orientation. I tried with shoes reversed and the wheels would lock up and not release. So I had it right the first time.

    1952 Case VAI axle seals

Update - replaced the right side axle seal. What a bear to remove. Couple of lessons learned. - Drill holes to install screws straight in parallel to the axle or you will risk putting a nick in the axle face. - don't go too far with screws as you will hit the washer covering the bearing and put...

Need a little help with brake shoe direction - 1952 Case VAI

My parts book shows the adjustment plate, mounted on the brake shoe assembly, facing towards the front once the shoes are installed. However, my shop manual shows the plate towards the rear. Since the shoe assembly can be flipped over, I am unsure which way the assembly goes. Does it matter? The...

Rear tire leaks at valve stem

Just make sure whoever installs the tube knows what they are doing. This tube was in my Case VAI for many years before it failed. Appears to be twisted over when originally put in. Amazing that it lasted as long as it did.
