The filter is the right one for my 1950 Farmall C..
The gasket on the right is too big.
And I damaged the old gasket removing it.
Another trip to town. The last time I bought a n oil filter I got it from
Advanced auto.
I can't believe the cost of the filter is close to the price of the oil. $22.50 with tax. Grrrr
Inflation

I never remove the old gasket. I have 12 tractors and have not had one leak yet from not changing the gasket. I bought the larger size filter from NAPA last week for my M and it was almost $27.

Not an oil filter- but- CaseIH seal kit 3 years ago, $97. Now, $159. And if you don't challenge them, the local dealer will charge you their inflated price of $173. There's an o-ring and hard plastic ring in this kit.

This is the first time I had a problem with the gasket being too large.
Ordered a Fleetwood filter from Amazon $17.50 plus tax.

Just a little FYI here enlighten your day...or maybe it won't.
As most of you know, the majority of NAPA filters have been just rebadged and repainted Wix filters. And in the past, I've never really had a problem with Wix filters. As far as removing the contaminants from the oil, they were never the greatest, but they got the job done and Wix made a filter for just about anything.
Well, not too long ago, Wix was bought out by Mann+Hummel. Mann+Hummel is a German corporation that has owned Purolator filters since ~2013. I'm not sure why out government powers that be didn't stop this buyout (well, we both know why....), but anyway, it happened. There's just one (theoretical) problem with all this. Why would Purolator and Wix BOTH manufacture the PH8A-equivalent (or ANY other number) filter on separate manufacturing lines? Well, it turns out they won't. Lines are being consolidated and prices are also being raised. Prices are going up to pay for the buyout cost. Anybody price a Motorcraft filter (most made by Purolator) at Wal-Mart lately? It's gone up a lot faster than inflation.
I guess what I'm getting at is it's possible that your old NAPA/Wix filter that used to have the good fitment and o-rings may no longer have the proper specs because you might now be using a Purolator instead of a Wix, even if the box says it's a Wix.

Someone MAY have switched seal rings between filter boxes as well, when having a look at the filters in the boxes, accidentally or on purpose to get a ring THEY needed.

I worked at a Napa stores from 1989 to 1999 and noticed that (napa filters made by wix) started to not include all the gaskets they once did. Napa 1172 was as perfect example. Gasket number5070 is right gasket but not always included. It's listed in the catalog but not listed on their computer. It can make for a really bad day if you don't it or the counter person don''t know or care to double check the paper book

I usually buy my filters from Napa. Have had good luck so far. I noticed in this post and a recent one you’d mentioned the price of oil. Seems oil is cheaper out there. A quart of oil here is between 7 to 12 dollars. Depending on what you’re buying. Some deals on the 7 quart jugs, and 2 gallon jugs. Still expensive though. Of course some sales are cheaper.

I buy most of my oil in gallons or 5-quart jugs, it's much cheaper than buying quarts. Mobil 1 0-20 full synthetic for our Subaru is about $25 for a 5 quart jug. Delvac 1300 15-40 that I use in all our tractors is $14.42 a gallon, these are Walmart prices, that's where I buy most of my oil now.

Geo, unfortunately J.C. Whitney no longer carries the toliet paper oil filter conversion kit, so your stuck with the high priced filters. Thanks for bringing this up, I checked my 300 Case filters and they have jumped 10 - 17 bucks. Found some for $4 above what I paid last time and ordered 5. I've got three tractors that use the filter.
