Can the input shaft on the ford 6x4 manual reversing transmission be removed without parts falling down into the oil
I am replacing the input shaft seal and I need to polish the shaft where the seal rides at this point I have not removed the top-shift tower
It looks like in the parts description that the input to main shaft bearing is caged ?
The original seal was totally deteriorated and I believe it was in backwards-shouldn’t the garter spring face the oil ?

The garter is supposed to go to oil side. Looks as if front plate comes out to remove input shaft. The manual I have is not real clear on the 6X4 trans.

👍 thanks. I was curious if the main shaft bearing in the back of the input shaft was caged or if is going to fall down into the transmission?

The 6x4 was only offered with trans PTO or no PTO. If it has the trans PTO, I see the snap ring in the parts drawing. If it has no PTO, I don't see a snap ring in the parts drawing. but it still might be there.

I do see it listed in the individual parts description. The parts drawing only lists one section as "W/Trans PTO" and another as "L/PTO". Threw me off.
