Beware of scammers!!!

Posted on classifieds looking for a breather for an AC WD. Got a response saying a member (XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX) might have one. I was told the best way to get in touch with him was an email. I sent a message to the email after looking at Ron's profile (he was a long-time member but hadn't posted in a while). I received a response with a picture and a decent price. Emailed back and forth on some other parts also. Being leery of interment scams but trusting "Ron" we agreed to half the $ via Apple Pay up front and half when I received the shipping invoice. The Apple Pay went through and next day I received a message saying: "My cousin has the tires, but he won't release them until he gets paid." More emails about scamming and more attempts to get me to pay more. Finally told him to go get his dinner in the outhouse. I want to point out and emphasize: THE FORUM MEMBER WAD NOT AND IS NOT INVOLVED IN THE IN ANY WAY!!! They used his member name just because he hadn't posted in a while. Beware folks these POS's are active everywhere.

That's a classic line right there. Added to my repertoire!

Sorry to hear you got taken. I have a sore spot on this because scammers took advantage of my mother. As for YT I think in the last couple of cases that were reported on the forum it sounds like reverting to email is the key “red flag” even though that might be a common step in a legitimate transaction. Sounds like asking them to communicate through a Direct Message (if you don’t know how, learn how!) here on the forum to add another step in verification would have made this one a no brainer. Secondly, insisting to speak at least once on the phone would be another way to help assure they are legitimate. If he sounds like awk-med then he likely isn’t a YTer. Will some sound like your next door neighbor? Yes, but the majority are foreigners, that might be obvious but needs said.

Some of the other forums I’m on don’t let people use the classifieds until they have a certain amount of posts. Some won’t even let them see them until the post quota is met.
