What method do you use to keep from getting paint on tires when painting rims?

As I use spray, I usually use masking tape in short lengths to adapt to the curvature of the outside of the rim, trying to tuck it in, between the tire and rim. On that, I tape sections of newspaper to cover the tire,. Very time consuming and tedious.

Playing cards tucked in between tire and rim. Or index cards, etc.

last ones I did I got some heavy painters plastic, knocked the tires off the beads, cut the plastic to just stretch over the rim lip, let the tire just hang and tape the loose edges to the the tread area a bit to keep them from flapping around, it worked great, after its dry either pull the plastic back over or just cut it off, air the tire up and all done!

I placed a piece of poster board paper, standing up, about 6-8” wide and long enough to get around the circumference of the outside edges of the rim with a little overlap to tape it together. This was with using aerosol cans.

I normally use masking tape close to the rim but the rest of the tire I cover with shrink wrap.

My brother has used dish soap. Mask close to the rim with tape, and paint on dish soap from there right up to the rim. Wash it off after the paint dries. Probably only works with spray painting, not brush painting.

Air down if need to, use playing cards or I've had good luck with cutting manilla folders in a slight curve and using them, the thickness seems about correct. I like using them because you get more protection than a playing card.

I try not to get much paint on the tires when spraying, then I use lacquer thinner on a rag to clean off the enamel over spray. It works good and shines the tires

That would not work with real paint like acrylic enamel or 2K urethane, they dry to fast. It would work only with alkyd enamel which never really gets hard and fades and gets dull in two - three years.

jack up the machine and let all the air pressure out of the tires to shrink the rubber away from the rim . now do your taping or cards .

I have used a product called Magic mask, you spray it on the tires with a spray gun and will wash off with water later. It does work but last 2 tractors I painted, did masking paper and tape to paint rims.

second on the small pieces of tape on tire after deflating, then another layer to make tape edge solid and to give you something to tape plastic to. Yes, it's very time consuming but do it right the first time!
