Farmall 200 first serial number

A cousin of mine had been telling me about an old farmall 200 that he owned that he thought was the first serial number produced. I went out and looked at it today and the serial tag matched up to be the first one. He is interested in selling the tractor but doesn’t do computers.

Any idea what this tractor would be worth? It runs and looks like a straight tractor.
Thank you

is it serial number 501 ???, as that's the first tractor. if so being the first one is a big deal with collectors. worth posting the serial number also. other than that its just a tractor as there was so many produced. probably around 2k. but it all depends on who wants it how badly. could be more.

Yes it’s the first. I posted a picture of tag. Not sure it went through or not.

The tag photo is viewable. My opinion is the CR-501 was added by some clever or unclever person and 980 is the real serial number. That J in there is a letter code suffix noting the tractor is equipped with a Rockford clutch. Notice I said “suffix” which means it follows. Does the engine stamp towards the front of the engine below the spark plugs show 501? Otherwise I am going to say the SN is 980, which would be a late in production of the first year, Nov. or Dec. 1954. Here is a link to the “Introduction” section of the manufacturers online parts catalog that tells you 1954 tractor 1 should have engine 501. This would have been included in the original paper parts book copies distributed to dealers.

ya something is not right here. i know J is rockford clutch. agree look at engine serial number, below number one spark plug. then post what you find. that serial number plate is a mess.

Looks like 940 is your serial number, J is the clutch designation (Rockford), CR is Chisholm Ryder followed by their machine number (501).

So, it's a low number 200, but not the 1st. More like the 439th. Would be a lot cooler if it still had all the hardware on it. Think they were bean harvesters built up by CR.

Definitely a skid unit probably for Chisholm Ryder. I have forgotten the exact format of those numbers. They are outside the regular issued numbers. I think 940 may be the spec number and 501 the sequence within that spec (first of that spec).

I have a 240 that was a C R string bean harvester. Serial number 614 CR601 J. Mine had no emblems anywhere, but lots of hydraulics. The steering wheel is several inches higher than a normal 240, seat is also higher to match steering wheel. I think the gearing in transmission is different, as there is very little variation in speeds between 2nd and 3rd gears, at least compared to speeds on my 200s. Original owner had stripped off the harvester and made a spray tractor of it. I added emblems, fast hitch off a 230, and a ROPS, and took off the saddle tanks.
