5610 Ford Shifter Question

The left hand gear shifter (8 speed tranny) on my 1991 5610 Ford needed a new plastic dust cap so I picked one up at new holland along with a new o-ring that fits under it, I was able to remove the lock ring and spring ok but now putting it back on is another story, is there a trick to it? Trying to push the spring down all the way and get the lock ring back on is a task in itself!!!!

Honestly the trick is steady pressure - if it’s uneven it won’t go, I usually compress it with a socket and tap the ring in bit by bit.
