Farmall M governor

I have a 1948 m that takes a few seconds to throttle down after you move the lever.
Looks like there is quite a bit of movement on internal shaft and bearing. I have another
governor off a 1942 h parts tractor that looks quite a bit tighter internally and was wondering
if they would be able interchangable. The only difference i see is the top portion that the carb
linkage runs through is a little taller on the m but they can be swapped. Also when i pull it off
does it have to be timed or does it matter. Thanks

Doesn't matter on timing, but I am of the opinion that the governors are physically different. But I could be wrong on that. Interestingly, I always found our M to be more responsive to throttle changes than the H.

Forgot to come back to this, I had a bit more time today an run across it. The main parts of the governors are the same between an H and M. The differences are the drive gears, the H is 45671D (16 tooth) and the M gear is 45935D (17 tooth) both mount on the same size shaft so they can be swapped. The other differences of the whole assembly are as you pointed out the housing that attaches with two bolts to the top is different, taller on an M. Also as you said the vertical rod is longer on an M to match the additional height.
Before you go to far swapping things around I would check that the control rod 23 is free and well lubed to rotate in tube 18, see link for reference. Messicks Farmall M governor diagram

Thanks for the info on the swap. Everything on the rod seems to be free and not sticking might try to swap the
gears and governor to see if there is any difference. Being from Canada it's sometimes tough getting parts just wondering
if you have had any luck with Messicks would like to rebuild the original

I have not used them for parts. It just so happened I was having trouble getting the manufacturers CNHI online parts site to come up because I thought it was due to me posting from an iPhone and it’s memory is low and I can’t load the latest software updates. Tonight it looks like it is working again. CNHI Farmall M governor diagram You will have to select your local dealer and it will give you prices of course I am not sure how that all works in Canada. The parts that are still available are shown with a price on the Messicks site when you click on the individual key numbers in the diagram or scroll down the list. So the same parts using the same PN’s should also be available from any CNHI dealer.

I was helping Tim Adkins today and he just got a 39 M but it seems to be froze tight, but looking at it , it has the M and W 9 speed tranny mechanical shift, not cable, and a Tomson govener, that would have been quite a tractor in its day
