JD5300 Adjusting the clutch

I bought a "new to me" 1996 John Deere 5300 PID LV5300E632121*

I did not do a good pre-purchase inspection (already gotten the lecture). Got it home and the clutch is slipping. I am hoping that it needs adjusting, but I cannot seem to figure out how to adjust it.

The operators manual has the following image : AT1110.gif

The problem is, I don't have the connecting clip pin (C in the image). Mine looks like this: JD clutch no pin.jpg

The top end of the rod JD Clutch adjust top end.jpg is threaded, but the top piece goes into a ball joint that has a lot of pressure on it. I might be able to get it off, but don't think I can get it back on without relieving the pressure. JD clutch adjust top end ball.jpg

I hope I am missing something obvious here....

The others are correct about the pin. As to the pressure on the ball joint, that indicates there is no free travel in the pedal and the clutch is not fully engaging. That is without a doubt why your clutch is slipping. When adjusted properly with the correct pedal free travel, there should not be any pressure on the linkage with the clutch engaged.

That is a great piece of information. Thank you! I popped the ball joint off, adjusted the amount of travel and put it back together.

If anyone has a parts break down for that area, I would appreciate it. All of the rubber bump stops are missing and I would like to replace them along with the C clip.

And as is normal with my luck, I cannot test the clutch because the tractor now refuses to start.....
