IH 606 Gas - no spark - distributor not turning

Afternoon guys I dug into the 606 I bought which was not running and no spark.

I narrowed it down to the distributor. When the engine cranks the distributor is not turning.

I removed the distributor and there seems to be a slot inside, which I took a picture of. When the engine is cranking slot doesn’t turn.
That being said, it doesn’t seem like it’s stripped or something because I can’t turn the slot with a pair of needle nose pliers either.

I had a question: is this a common issue with these motors? And also, how much trouble am I in lol.

My only guess is maybe a gear got stripped or something along those lines.

The valves are opening and closing, so it’s not that anything timing wise is messed up I wouldn’t think.

Would there have been some kind of distributor gear that was meant to fail if something got stuck?

Any help would be appreciated thanks

no, on the end of the dist. post a pic. ooh so now i see u say the slot dont turn. missed that. so most likely the gears at the cam are worn. get a good pair of plyers on the tab and wiggle it and try to turn it. little needle nose not gonna do much. might be pulling the pan for an inspection of the cam drive.

Would the roll pin be accessed from underneath like have to drop the oil pan?
The shaft with the drive tang you see in the recess is the top end of the oil pump shaft, see link. ASAP IH C-221 oil pump The oil pump drive gear stripping is not an unheard of failure. Determining if the gear on the camshaft is still in good enough shape to drive a new oil pump gear will be a required assessment when the oil pump is removed.

and that would be a lot of water and would definitely do some damage. kinda foolish not to be checking the oil in the first place.

Thanks that’s helpful

Well if that Is NOT turning then neither is the OIL pump , SOOOOOOOOo i would say you have a issue with the cam shaft NOT turning either . Now is it a broken cam ???????? or timing gears?????? To rfind out your going to have to drop the pan and pull the oil pump and see if by chance that many be it is locked up then your going to have to pull the ft timing cover and look there. Now once you drop the oil pump out and go to put it back in i5t has to go in a certain way timed to the timing gears so that slot line up correct to get the dist. to time correctly . Have fun.

He said the valves are going up and down , so the cam shaft has to be turning. But he did not say if all the valves were going up and down. So I did not include timing gears
