John Deere R with Rare Steel Wheels

Yeah, When I saw that I thought " what an fool. let the clutch in [i:0c686c3754]slowly[/i:0c686c3754]." If It had flipped it would of smashed him in between the tractor and the steel of the sled.

Yep. Many years ago our karate teacher would not let us compete in competitions. He said those other teams would kill anybody for a 25 cent trophy, not worth it.

Grew up in the rice fields with all steel wheels...D,R,WD9,LA,660 & even a 820, 830. First
rubber tire I ran was a 4020. Still have a '51 & '53 R, '45 & '49 D on rubber. By the way,
saying they were never ordered depends where you are. Never saw rubber on a R in the 50's in
rice country. 5th gear slot was welded from the factory so it could not be used.

If the hitch point is outside of the rear wheel radius it will not go over backwards. As the hitch point goes down pretty soon it will be pulled back. The ground contact point is the fulcrum and the load (hitch point) can't be pulled forward which it would have to be if the tractor was to go over.

There's a guy out here in Colorado has an
R on full steel. He pulled it once with
the club I'm in. He pulls in another club
more. It was on the cover of Green
Magazine a few years ago.

I've been to several tractor pulls that allowed pulling with steel. They're just for fun pulls. The same pulls allowed the big Steam Traction Engines to pull. They could pull the sled for miles with out any issue.

My grandpa had 2 model R with spiked steel wheels he used them in SWFL chopping pine palmetto woods with a set of M8 choppers behind each tractor he said the only bad part about them was he couldn't keep front axles under them because they had so much torque and would crawl up a pine tree and snap it so fast

Never heard of a pull that alowed steel wheels
Very few pulls around here ban steel wheels, biggest issue is normally running them across the scale without protecting the scale deck.
