Hi all. I have two four-cylinder 4000 Industrials I am restoring. One was originally red and buff, the other was blue and yellow. I would like to match the original colors as closely as I reasonably can. Two questions: 1) Are the correct colors available off-the-shelf anywhere, or do I need to have them custom-blended for my use? 2) If I need to have them mixed, is there any kind of code I can give to the person who will be mixing the paint to enable him to match the original colors?

The Ford forum is the place you want to ask this. You have the names nearly correct. The shade of yellow was as you posted, buff, and I would call it was a pale brownish yellow. You see a lot of them painted way too yellow. The yellow of the 4000 was the same buff as the earlier "Light industrial". It is possible that you could find it on the shelf but doubtful, and it wouldn't be labeled as such. I suggest checking at Arthur's tractors. Whatever you do stay away from CNH!!!!! they are trying to get all the old Ford owners to forget about any shade of red prior to 1958, as well as less used ones from later.

The orange red and buff is 1959 to 62
The blue and buff is 1962 to 65
The model number for all of them uses thousand series numbers
The serial number for the red tractors follows the hundred series numbers.

The orange red is the same color used on the 801 ag tractors and you should be able to buy it off the shelf.
The blue is the same color used on the 4000 ag tractor and you should be able to find this one off the shelf also.
The buff is a special brown yellow color. I don’t know anyone that stocks it on the shelf. You will need an auto paint store to mix it for you. Search the archives of this site especially on the paint board as the color code has been posted in the past.
