What's this doohickey?

The quick hitch was designed to bolt into most typical swinging drawbars of that era. Bolt through the center hole of it and the hitch hole.

A U bolt or 2 bolts and a strap through the other 2 smaller holes to clamp around the tractor drawbar.

Fords of that era did not always have a typical singing drawbar like IHC, jd, Allis, Massy, etc had. That socket o yours seems to be in an odd location. I’m very familiar with a swinging drawbar on the 100 series Fords, but not much experience with the Ns.

This should explain it.

That's an aftermarket kit. The original Ford option is the the one with the roller that sat on the drawbar, like in the picture I shared.
Your picture in reply #21 is not a swinging drawbar. it's a stationary drawbar. And you're correct, The old Fords did not offer a swinging drawbar, an owner had to buy aftermarket.

I’ve never seen the setup Timmy shows.

Dad had yet a different setup, bought a pair of them at auction, modified them to work on the 100 series. They fit on the 3pt arms and allow swinging, and extension of the drawbar. Nothing is pinned back to the tractor axle/ pumpkin, it’s all just on the arms.

if I ever think of it I’ll have to find one and get a pic.

Here's an aftermarket one that was made for the 9N-2N-8N like that but doesn't look like it extends. Calhoun made one that extended but I can't find a picture of one. Red Rock Manufacturing had a reproduction of the Calhoun a few years back, but doesn't offer it anymore.

We have "doohickeys", "thingamabobs", and "widgets" down here too.....Sorry I couldn't resist the pun......No I'm not, I posted this deliberately. How do you talk about something of which you are unaware of the proper name? Well you call it what comes to mind.....I do.

Thanks Timmy. Interesting stuff. Yea ours are very similar, but extend as well so must be the original Calhoun maybe.
