Why does my David Brown 880 start up and then shut down after 5-10 minutes.
I rebuilt the high pressure pump. Is a connection wrong?

Hello there!
how long do you have to wait before the tractor starts again?

I would start by running the tractor until it dies, then cracking the inlet line on the injection pump. If the fuel line is restricted, you wouldn't be getting any fuel there.

If you do get fuel there, then wait until you can run the tractor. Run the tractor again until it dies, then crack one of the return line fittings. If you can get the tractor to start after that, then something in the fuel return is blocked.

Is it possible that a fuel-shutoff valve is turned off?

Keep us updated!

Hello SJT, welcome to YT! I don’t know David Brown’s very well, but I see by looking at the manufacturers parts catalog that your tractor uses a CAV fuel system similar to those used by Massey Ferguson. Something that has been a problem for others in the past has been using Wix or NAPA filters on them. When using them if an “extra” oring is placed on top of the filter in the outer groove it partially blocks fuel flow. Here is a link to a past YT thread that covers this very well. Wix/NAPA filters on CAV system
Please keep us informed of your findings and answering the “how long before it will restart” question posed by Powered by IH would be helpful.

Hi,
All fuel shutoffs are open and when I use the lift pump, I can hear the fuel returning into the fuel tank. The lift pump bowl and filters are clean.
The lift pump and the fuel filters are brand new. The throttle level now revs in the opposite direction compared to the way it used to rev.

Thank you for your response. Any help would be appreciated.

Regarding the throttle lever revving in the opposite direction: The rebuilder must have mounted that little lever on the top of the injection pump 180 degrees out. That should be about a 10 minute fix for you to do on your own.

Regarding the shut down problem: Have you taken off the fuel tank and flushed it of all sediment (and leaves and who knows what else - like what was in my tanks)? When you flush the tank, be sure to blow out the pick up tube in reverse direction with compressed air.

The pick up tube that David Brown installed in those tanks was too small internal diameter in my opinion. Clogs easily.

If you can hear fuel returning to the tank when you crank on the hand lever, well that tells me that your return lines are open.
