550 shifter--again

I am in the same boat as dmsimmons as far as tractor stuck in gear. I have reverse only. Any other position and the tractor dies--no neutral. I read the posts about pulling the shifter out and lining up the 3 rails. 2 are in line. One is not and I have moved it some, but still not in line with the others. Dare I try to tap on that one with a hammer and bar, or is that asking for trouble. I also noticed the ball on the end of the shifter has 2 flat sides. They are not chewed up, and almost looks like it was made that way, but it would seem to defeat the purpose of a ball. Should that thing be round? THanks all.

Thanks. It looked machined, but I don't take anything for granted when working on that tractor.

I don't think this photo will help anything, but we have a set of rails out of the 550 lying around so I took a photo for reference in case someone comes along and finds this thread...

Ken if you cannot get the rail to go in place or its still locking up. You may have to dismantle it. and look deeper bad gear, broken fork, damaged rail bent shaft and so on.

Thanks. IT started out not going into 1 and 3. Whent to plow with it in 2, backed up to turn around and that is when it got stuck in Reverse

I had that happen with my 1550. A shift rail broke. It would push the fork so it went in to reverse, but being broken, it wouldn't pull the fork to get it back out of reverse, I took the shift out, got it out of reverse with a rod, but as soon as I shifted in to reverse again, the same thing happened, it was stuck right back in.
