I have a broken axle shaft on my 5 foot 2way disc it broke right at the first bearing (of course).it’s an oddball 62” long.standard is 57” or67”.I can shim it a bunch or have the 67” one machined.Has anyone welded one back together with any luck or is it just too much stress at that point?

Grind a nice deep chamfer on both sides basically down to a point so you have 100% weld penetration with no crack left in the center. Pre heat the shaft 6-8 inches both sides of the break with a torch. Doesn’t need to be red hot but you want it plenty warm so you don’t induce stress at the weld point. May need to make several torch passes to keep the area warm until you get the weld built up. Once it’s done let it come all the way back down to ambient temp on its own. Even better if you have a bucket of (preferably hot) sand to stick it in so it will cool even slower.
