1950 John Deere A For one reason or another they didn,t put a shutdown on the mag on this tractor. To shut it down you cut fuel off or idle it down and

clutch it ,does not make make much sense. Anyone ever put a kill switch on the magneto, you get into trouble and you instantly kill the the engine.Their way of shutting down an engine I haven,t seen in my fifty years of my mechanics.Poor idea I think. Jr

The john Deere D never had a mag shut off either. I thought it had a terminal on the mag where u could run A wire to a ground switch. It was probably the idea to burn up the distillate in the carb so it could be started on gas when cold. They had a little gas starting tank.

I have an all original 1941 John Deere B, it had no mag kill switch. There is no terminal on the mag to attach a kill switch. You can add your own kill switch if you like.

Mother Deere had a distributor option by late 1950 that was the plan they had for keyed shutdown. I prefer the distributor it’s easier to kill if something happens.

The unstyled and early ones hopping off to shut the fuel off or choking it off are your 2 options (on the unstyled early ones with no choke lever you are hopping off to choke it on the ground as well)

Watch the video 560dennis provided if you want a shutdown button on your mag

My A you shove the throttle towards full idle an it shuts off
Always been that way since I have been around it
Just assumed that was shutdown
Guess I should of asked grandfather if it had Always been that way

I used to shut off the gas on my 48 A until it quit running. Until I pulled the throttle all the back one day and it shut right off.

The Wico X mags on my tractors have a grounding button on the backside of the mag. The SOP for shutting down Deere engines varied by tractor. I've only used the grounding buttons once or twice that I can remember. On hand starts I run the carb dry. For emergency shutoff, throttle lever all the way back.
