188 Diesel Quandry

This may have been covered before, but here goes again. The 470 was parked in the building since about last November, battery fully charged, w/ a jump pack besides. 65 degrees. SOB would not start. Used the Manifold heater, but was not getting fuel because no smoke. Would spin over great. I pressurized the fuel tank several times while cranking to no avail. Had fuel at the top of the filter, and at the pump inlet line. I cracked 1 injector line, but nothing there. Finally we towed it. 4th Low was spinning about 400RPM. Nothing. Went to 3rd Hi, then she started and ran great. When parked, fuel stop is always returned to run position. Now that I have started it for the year, it will always start. It does this after sitting a while. Any thoughts?

ANY traces of water/condensation OR Bio diesel in pumps that set unused awhile can cause the metering valve AND/OR the rotor plungers to stick, meaning NO fuel delivered to injectors.
Hey Richard! Thanks for the reply. Hopefully the filters would catch anything before it got to the pump. Not Bio-Diesel in the tank. Why would towing to spin faster than the starter make the difference?

Spinning the engine faster raises the injection pump charging pump pressure a bit higher than the starter can, and can knock loose MILDY stuck rotor plungers. In most times even that won't help when the plungers are stuck so tight the pump must be torn down to get them free again. Best thing to do is start and use it more often, and keep the tank FULL, as a full tank won't have the condensation water in fuel trouble like an empty/low fuel level will.

I was LUCKY ,, I had not needed my 450 in three years,, maybe four, it did have 3/4 of a tank of fuel yet,, and it has zero fuel system leaks, unlike a couple others I have and need to pull and send to diesel tech for work,, anyway topped off fluids installed a battery and the beast fired up with a few turns,, I know better than to let them set that long,, just ran it another hour or so today pushing dirt ,, Glad you got it running,, I also am a big believer in Stanadyne fuel conditioner in every gallon,, I add it to my 1000 gallon tank before filling,, I have almost zero issues other than the Roosa systems getting leaks with my fleet,, sure we chatted before bout me liking it lol

I've got other 188 diesels. Only this 1 bothers.

A good friend I worked with years ago at the diesel shop always said customers should NEVER own two of the same make/model of ANYTHING, cars trucks or tractors, because ONE of them is NEVER as good as the other! LOL.
Solid advice. But I do exactly the opposite and have several of the same models, albeit for completely different reasons. Park them in different sheds at opposite ends of the farm. As long as you never have them in the same field at the same time, the the wife won't realize you have more than one.
