1966 Ford 4000 Fuel Filters.

So my 1966 is having some fuel issues, it has been stuttering a bit, and we think it could be something to do with the fuel filters. Either way, they haven’t been replaced in the best bit of 40 years. So what are the differences between CAV and HDF fuel filters? Are they interchangeable? Is one superior to the other? My 1966 has 2 CAV’s, but the 72 has 1 HDF.

The parts site only lists one part number for the fuel filter kit, which includes the top and bottom o-rings, regardless of whether it has the single or dual filter head. Part number 83937061. I assume that you would need two of the kits for the one with the double filter. The picture shows a New Holland logo on the filter. It crosses to two different Wix filter kits, 33166 & WF8018. Both Wix kits show that they include the o-rings as well.

These are the current ones on it, if that helps.

The Wix fits fine. That is what I use on my 5000. Use only one of the smaller square orings.. Must be early 4000 since has filter cover over starter. Most get took off and never put back on.

CAV 296 crosses to WIX 33166 (most commonly used WIX number) or the WIX WF8018 as Sean posted. Others are NAPA 3166 (looks like they don't have one like the WF8018). Baldwin crosses the WIX numbers to their BF825. The CAV 296 is still a good number.

The important thing with WIX types (NAPA and CarQuest) is not to put a seal ring in the groove that is around the inside of the top of the element, the fuel passage slots are there. The seal ring fits up into the head of the housing, after removing the old one, to seal on the rim of the element can.

I’m not sure what your calling HDF filter is but CAV 296 filter is a very popular filter used on Fords and other brands
My 68 4000 and 72 4000SU both have CAV 296 filters or aftermarket versions of that filter, of the 10+ Ford tractors my family owns only the 6610 uses a different filter, which is a longer version of the 296 filter

Instead of CAV it says HDF. It’s an HDF296. On it it says replaces CAV 7111-296

While the WIX 33166 will fit it and probably do just fine, They do not have a sleeve in the center or holes in the bottom of them and thus, They do not completely work they way the system is designed to. The system is designed to push raw fuel through the center of the filter and allowing it to fall to the bottom of the sediment bowl (thus allowing the sediment bowl to do its job and trap heavier particles) and fill up and push up through the bottom of the filter and come out filtered on the outside edge of the top of the filter. The WIX just allows fuel to enter through the center and thus has a tendency to clog up easier if using dirty fuel.

I see That particular WIX filter everywhere just because of price and availability. Never do seem to get the life out of them as I do the others though.

Look into a Baldwin BF825 it is designed properly like the CAV filters. It also has a finer micron rating. Fleetguard FF167A is another decent filter.
