David Brown 880 Shuts Down

What type of fuel filter is recommended for David Brown 880 tractors? We used a Wix-Napa fuel filter and now found out that the o-rings at both ends of the filter
close off the fuel supply. Wondering if this has been our problem all along. Our tractor starts and runs for 5-10 and then shuts off.
Also regarding the retarding adjusting screw on the high pressure pump, should it be screwed in or out during normal operation?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Napa/Wix filters come with three large O rings for tractors that have a glass bowl and need three O rings. The filter top OUTER groove JUST inside the base sealing lip is the furl INLET passage and MUST NOT be blocked with an extra O ring, that's a COMMON mistake on those filters. The cold start advance lock out screw should be turned LEFT/OUT for running. It's to be turned fully IN to help with cold starts, then backed out after engine is running. Some filter bases also have a CONSTANT BLEED orifice fitting on top of the final filter, it's job is to vent any trapped air in the filter base out BEFORE the air can get into injection pump and cause air lock shut down. When that orifice is plugged that CAN cause the trouble you describe and worth a look. The fitting can be straight or a banjo bolt with small hole drilled in the bolt side.

SJT, welcome to YT! Its not that the filters are wrong or won’t work it’s that an extra oring is mistakenly laid in the top groove in the filter as Dieseltech pointed out. The top of the filter seals on the raised rib of the outer diameter against an oring in the head. Here is a link to an older YT thread that explains it and has photos.
