Hey guys could an amateur mechanic like myself change the head gasket and other associated work on a BD-154 effectively? Or am I looking to be in over my head on this one. Thank you for your input.

If your mechanically inclined with the proper manual you should be able to do it.
The most important thing is a goid service manual laying out the steps required to do the job.

I guess I should ask you first, what makes you assume it's a head gasket? Oil in coolant or coolant in oil? Lost power, backfiring, what are the symptoms? Have you done other testing to verify it is a head gasket?

If it is a head gasket, I would definitely be doing some other things while I'm in there, but I would want to make sure it is a head gasket problem first.

It has been a long time but last I recall it was oil in coolant with a slight white color to the exhaust. Power was okay but my Grandfather, before passing, told me it had a head gasket issue. Lastly, further investigation revealed it was run without a thermostat.

Does this tractor run so you could verify the claim? Do you have easy access to the tractor or is it some distance away?
Do you by chance have access to borrow or buy a coolant pressure test kit? That would help confirm a leaky head gasket.

I would just hate for you to pull the head only to find that wasn't the issue, but everything kind of points to a head gasket issue.

I am going to get it running hopefully this weekend. I am going to see about a coolant pressure test kit.
