Oil question

OK, so I have a Ford 4610 diesel and have historically used Delo 400 15w40. I decided to switch to Shell Rotilla 10w40. due to a change in distributors. The tractor never used hardly any oil between changes but after I switched to Rotila it started using some oil. Not a bunch but definitely more than it ever did before. I have heard about switching oils sometimes can increase oil consumption but I have never heard what the actual cause is. Any ideas? Thanks

When I was in college at Ohio State we had a guest speaker in our Power Mechanics class (fancy name for basically auto shop). He showed us a test of 5 major brands of oil. There was virtually no difference between the results.
That test convinced me that any major brand oil was good enough for all my needs. And so far I have yet to have any mechanical equipment failure due to the oil I chose.

first of all,... was the 1040 diesel rated oil? i have had very poor performance anytime i tryed shell oil.. tryed shell 15-40 oil in my duramax once , truck used oil . all because i could not get castrol oil. next time used petro can oil and it was back to normal no oil useage between changes. now i have castrol 15-40 back in it and no oil use between changes. tryed that shell in the tractor and it did the same thing. i will never use any shell oil. mobile oil is also good. all i know is i tryed it and thats the proof right there about shell oil.

Very good information.
Lubrizoil makes additives for oil. They run tests 24/7 for 200 k miles . The tested ,weight the bearings before and after for each oil tested , No measure difference in oils tested. Totally agree with your comment.
Suggest testing identical sae with code and weight.

I didn’t even know that Rotella makes a 10w40.
In non syn (T4)They make a 15w40 and a 10w30
In the blend (T5) it’s the same and in full syn.(T6) they make a 15, 5 and 0W40 and a 10W30.

That's why I use Castrol in everything.

"Rotella" gets tossed around a lot, but you need to realize that there are several different "Rotella" oil families for different uses

I took my 2002 F-150 with 198,000 miles on the clock to Just Brakes. I ordered a front end alignment and a conventional oil change. I thought the price quote that they quoted over the phone was a little high, but what the heck. When I went to pay the bill they had added a radiator flush and tried ito convince me I had okayed it over the phone. Then I realized they had filled it with full synthetic oil. Less then 500 miles later ever gasket on the engine was showing an oil leak. While I can't prove synthetic oil was the problem with the gaskets going bad but there is no doubt in my mind. Guess which auto service I will never go to again. BobTx

Not much choice these days, they are al crooks ripping people off. IMHO 👨‍🌾

I have heard (here maybe) synthetic oil will cause leaks. I use Traveller diesel rated 30w in everything. If it's not broken why fix it?

if synthetic oil causes leaks then why do all new vehicles use synthetic oil?
