Remarks brought back memories as a youngster. Following wheat harvest, plowed then waited for some rain and then disked it down with a 21' S model single disk or maybe with several rains would work down the plowed ground with a spring tooth harrow, all being pulled with a JD model D tractor. Usually took several workings with the spring tooth to prepare a proper seed bed for the next wheat crop. Seldom used a spike tooth harrow except to prep for alfalfa planting. Old implements are still sitting here in the weeds. For us double disc after plowing.
definitely , that's what they were used for, we used to plow with the j d 55 3/16 plow then the field got disc 'ed with the 10 ft j d KBA . got to remember back the them disc's were pretty much top of the line and were heavy enough to do a pretty good job. there was lighter disc's back then also but john deere had a good disc. thats what i learned on , with these two implements and the mccormick w6. just like Danny Hoopers john deere song.Back in the day, would the John Deere KBA disc have been used after moldboard plowing or was it more of a final pass finishing disc and something more heavy/heavy duty was used to break up the moldboarded ground?
Just curious - Thanks!
I guess it depends on your soil. On the home farm or any of the ones within two miles of it, I could spring moldboard plow or chisel plow, then go over with the KBA, then go with the springtooth harrow right before planting. However, when I got some ground about 4 miles south of the home farm, the KBA would just bounce over the clay clods left after moldboard or chisel plowing. That's when I bought the heavy Taylor-Way disc.Back in the day, would the John Deere KBA disc have been used after moldboard plowing or was it more of a final pass finishing disc and something more heavy/heavy duty was used to break up the moldboarded ground?
Just curious - Thanks!
