John Deere KBA Disc Harrow Question

Back in the day, would the John Deere KBA disc have been used after moldboard plowing or was it more of a final pass finishing disc and something more heavy/heavy duty was used to break up the moldboarded ground?

Just curious - Thanks!

IMHO a JD KBA disk harrow was more of a finishing tandem that could be used on land plowed with moldboard if the plowed soil experienced some freezing temps to help the clods break down.

FIL used one along with a Dunham cultimulcher in tandem. Sometimes cultimulcher first with the disc behind, sometimes disc first. Depending on soil conditions but I never understood his reasoning.

I used one for a few years. I was turning over and reseeding. The KBA never seemed to give me good return on my time. I borrowed my neighbor's heavier IH and got it done.

For us double disc after plowing.
Remarks brought back memories as a youngster. Following wheat harvest, plowed then waited for some rain and then disked it down with a 21' S model single disk or maybe with several rains would work down the plowed ground with a spring tooth harrow, all being pulled with a JD model D tractor. Usually took several workings with the spring tooth to prepare a proper seed bed for the next wheat crop. Seldom used a spike tooth harrow except to prep for alfalfa planting. Old implements are still sitting here in the weeds.

definitely , that's what they were used for, we used to plow with the j d 55 3/16 plow then the field got disc 'ed with the 10 ft j d KBA . got to remember back the them disc's were pretty much top of the line and were heavy enough to do a pretty good job. there was lighter disc's back then also but john deere had a good disc. thats what i learned on , with these two implements and the mccormick w6. just like Danny Hoopers john deere song.

Up here in frozen Mn. we fall moldboard and left till spring. Then twice over it with the quack digger and then drag and plant. Only thing we used the disk for was the thistle patches because you cannot get thistles with the spike teeth on a quack digger.

I guess it depends on your soil. On the home farm or any of the ones within two miles of it, I could spring moldboard plow or chisel plow, then go over with the KBA, then go with the springtooth harrow right before planting. However, when I got some ground about 4 miles south of the home farm, the KBA would just bounce over the clay clods left after moldboard or chisel plowing. That's when I bought the heavy Taylor-Way disc.

We bought a 12 foot kba to go with the 560 . I thought that was the hot set up .
Actually bought the kba first to fit the wheat field s rental from dick Brady ,a ford 5000 and jd 4 -16 to plow it .
That was gravy compared to what we had .
Think I was 19 at that time .
Had to laugh , kid that delivered the tractor showed me how to use it setup . Said this sure is a long nnalert field, yup , made one round. He said I’ll see you next week .
