Waukesha XAH

Hi all, I have an XAH that either needs major repair, or replacement. It's in a 1933 International, but a stationary engine with electric start would also work. It has a big oval shaped crack in the block that could possibly be brazed, but I want to find out if it's worth fixing. I've pulled two of the main bearing caps but the rear one seems to be slightly trapped by the bellhousing. The two I got off look good but plastigaging didn't squeeze down even near to the .003" max clearance the specs show. The semi-useful reprint manual for various Waukesha engines seems to mention shims that can adjust clearance, but not sure what that entails.
Can anyone with good working knowledge of rebuilding these please get back to me? Also, anyone with a complete XAH for sale.
Thanks, Chris

Hey CLL! Welcome to the forums!

From my experience the stationary engine section doesn't get as much attention as the others. Probably because the old timers that worked on these things are fading.

Anyways, I know nothing about the waukesha engines, or the old ih pickups.

I did recently fix a cracked engine block though. Can you post pictures of what you have? Sometimes its easier to fix what you have vs find another 80ish year old part that's in better shape than yours

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to add some pics. Guess I can't find any pics of the cracked block, but it's a large complete oval that goes up into the cylinder area where the block isn't flat but curves like four vertical cylinder segments. Too complex to stitch with iron screw plugs, so will probably braze up if I can figure out if the engine is worth patching. I need to find someone who has had these apart and knows how to adjust bearing clearance, etc. Chris
