Trans trouble in 40 B

I have had to, for a few years, had to wait for a few minutes to change gears in my 40 B. Id also have to retard the gas to almost idleing. Tonight I took it and hitched it to my 8ft horse disc in my garden. When I was done, I found I couldnt disengage it from low. What should I do??

Your dear B is due for a clutch replacement. If you undertake that project, spare no expense. If done right, you'll enjoy changing gears instead of waiting and grinding gears. Have the flywheel resurfaced, replace the pilot bearing, pressure plate, clutch release bearing and clutch disc. Just my opinion. Beware, splitting a tricycle tractor can be tricky, be careful.

First, I would try readjusting your clutch. Make sure the clutch has the specified freeplay as per the Operator's Manual, then go from there.

What do you mean by couldn't disengage it in low? Like you stepped on the clutch and the tractor kept moving?

nO. WHEN i STEPPED ON THE CLUTCH IT STOPPED, BUT i COULD ONLY KILL IT BY PUTTING THE GAS BACK ALL THE WAY. iT PULLING THE HORSE DISC OPENED UP KILLED IT. wHEN i PUSHED ON THE CLUTCH AGAIN i STILL COULDNT GET IT OUT OF FIRST
I can break it apart OK, and brace the front end, but h ow do I back the rear end up enough to work on it??

Ok, let me get this straight first.
When you stepped on the clutch the tractor physically stopped moving, but you could only shut the tractor off by idling it down all the way?
Then when you revved the tractor up you killed it and you still couldn't get it out of first?
I'm just trying to understand what you are saying here, no harsh feelings needed.

It does sound like your clutch severely needs adjustment or replacement.
If/when you do split your tractor, I would also recommend putting a jack under the rear drawbar so the rear half doesn't flip over backwards,

Sorry, I never said anything about revving it back up. Ive replaced my grandads 34 CC Case once when I was young, Im 78 now. The weight in front of the axles was such I didnt have to worry about the back end flipping over. Do u know/think, that it would flip over? Everything else u stated is right. Thanks for the insight

I wouldn't think it would flip over either, but I wouldn't take a chance, even if you have to borrow a jack. A stack of wood blocks works too, I just wouldn't want to chance it. Simple enough thing to do.

do the normal thing and push the front ahead, block the back end up good. hook an engine stand to the front , get it anchored behind the engine and your away. engine stand has wheels also, not much weight in that little tractor. i have never yet pushed the rear back takes me an hr. to roll my 660 ahead to do a clutch and thats giving lots of time. i use the chain hoist for that on wheels.

I was doing something to a VAC one time, and had split it. I put my boy on side and me on the other and was gonna roll it forward. It started to go his way, and he just backed up. We had a HECK of a time raising that engine back up again

To tell the truth, Im afraid to roll the front end forward, from my experience mentioned above or below . When I did my grandads CC Case, I jacked the front end up and braced it. Then I put onna those wheel jacks that looks like a station jack with 4 wheels underneath

the trans and fastened to the drawbar. The jack was on a 2 X 12 X 8fter. Then I just put the CC in reverse, and with the pulley, rolled it backwards

I can tell u theres likely a heck of alot of weight in that engine as I found out when I had to raise a VAC engine off the ground. I dont have a engine stand, but do have saw horses im hoping will fit under neath it

That is because you’re not using proper equipment. When a chain hoist is tied to the engine holding it up , no way that engine is gonna tip over. U need a chain hoist on wheels. That little tonka toy as I call them are a piece of cake. There is next to nothing for weight. The front of them tractors are not that heavy. A little wiggle and a prybar in the bell housing and out she comes. Or else u need to build splitting stands on wheels.

Well, Im 78, long retired and living on SS only. I dont have a pipe stand, and if I did more than likely it wouldnt have wheels. I also dont have a chain hoist
