2240 diesel starting

My 2240 won't start without ether when the temp is around 65 or below. Give it a little shot and it starts right up and runs fine. When it's around 70 it starts right up without ether and runs fine. The fuel pump is less than a year old and the injection pump was rebuilt about two years ago.

How many hours are on your tractor? It could be weak compression caused by cylinder wear and/or leaking valves. A compression pressure test is in order.

Have you ever utilized a frt pump destroking screw while attempting to start engine?? Has inj pump timing been checked lately? I suggest to perform an engine cylinder compression test. I also suggest to test pressure & spray pattern of injectors.

I second checking your injection pump timing first.

Injection timing too late ?
Too much ether too often tends to beak the piston rings . Which lowers the compression further .
If using a rebuild kit. There are some with higher compression than others .

How fast would you say the starter is turning over the engine? Is there a difference in cranking speed hot weather vs cold weather?
Our 2240 is not a great cold weather starter (but it’s a mower tractor, so it doesn’t really matter). Mostly (I believe) because I have one old group 31 battery instead of the factory 2 batteries in parallel. We have about 3/4 of the usual CCA.
Otherwise, I’d second Tx Jim’s destroke kit suggestion.

Oh, and one other thing, if you haven’t already updated the factory ground strap to a sheet metal location, do. It really needs a decent ground cable to a good ground (like a starter bolt).

I think you meant to post relocate the ground strap from the sheet metal location to a starter bolt.

I’ll agree that my sentence is poorly structured. But what I said is correct. Let’s try again… Remove the ground strap (that is often originally connected to sheet metal), and replace it with a real cable, and connect that cable to a good ground (like a starter bolt).
