IH 444 fuel shutoff solenoid

Anyone know much about a fuel shutoff solenoid on a marvel schebler tsx-896 carb on an IH 444? I've been having issues with the tractor backfiring, missing, and/or dying after running it for a while. It seems to help if I leave the hood off. The solenoid is right next to the manifold/exhaust. Could the solenoid be getting hot and be opening and closing causing this? Is there a solution to fix this? Is it a completely different issue? Can the solenoid be done away with? Can the needle be cut off? Does anyone know anything about this or experienced this?

Hello J. Hanna, welcome to YT! The general failure of those solenoids is they either work or they don’t. The exhaust running close to it may add another “kink in the works” but I am not sure. The purpose of the solenoid is to minimize “dieseling or run on” by closing fuel flow to the main jet when the ignition is turned off.
Your tractor has ignition points have you looked at them? How about the spark plugs?

Thanks for answering my questions. I've replaced the points and spark plugs and wires. It just seems like after running the tractor for some time it will start the spitting/sputtering, backfiring, and/or dying. I do have some rust in my fuel tank and I'm always cleaning the sediment bowl. Little pieces of rust and sand like material. Could that possibly be the issue I wonder? Thanks again for replying.

You’re welcome! Just incase you didn’t know the elbow fitting where the fuel line connects to the carb has a strainer screen in it that can also plug. See number 10 in this diagram. CNHI IH C-153 M/S carb diagram
Also look in the bottom of the tank to see how much crud is in there. Sometimes there is enough in there to block the outlet to the sediment bowl. There are strainer screens that can be installed there to help with that problem.

Thanks Larry. I thought I could do that but wasn't sure.
Many carbs that used those solenoids have parts available to covert them to a manual adjuster so you can adjust the load fuel flow. I have gotten the manual adjuster parts for several JDs from McDonald Carb and Ignition.

This site shows one for IH carbs and one for MS carbs in their 444 parts listings.

Thanks. I'll definitely look into that.

sounds simple but may want to check fuel flow to the carb. mine, before we bought it from grandma, had issues not staying running very well especially under load. turned out 50 years of dirt and crud were blocking the screen in the bottom of the tank. it was getting just enough fuel to run under normal conditions but not enough under load.
