1959 Allis Chalmers D12 starter

I have a starter with 10 teeth on the bendix.
Am wanting to replace it with a new one. Can only find new ones with 9 teeth. Can I use these?

I guess that my next question is, which is the correct number of teeth on a D12 nine or ten?
Maybe the previous owner put the wrong starter in it. Any info is appreciated!

My 1965 Wilson catalog says. D10 or 12 with 125 gas engine and starter # 1107474 used Drive # D316.: Internet search says D316 had 10 teeth if you want to believe AI. AI is sometimes correct.

look here on yesterdays tractor d12 starter parts both 9 and 10 tooth are offered or call them for complete starter help or put this in allis forum down below someone like Dr Allis may chime in with help

Did a cross reference and this what I came up with
DELCO EARLY, PRESTOLITE STARTERS
DETAILS: 10/11-TOOTH, CCW, HEAVY DUTY 9 COIL SPRING, KEYWAY & SET SCREW
DIMENSIONS: 15.9MM ID, 40MM GEAR OD, 145MM L
Lester number 4181
drive number 3-121 I don't see a 9t working

There is a serial number break for the D10 and D12 starter and the drives are different.

This may be due to the change from the 6-volt system of early production tractors to the 12-volt systems of later production tractors. I know that happened with the D14s.

You need the 6 volt starter and drive to match the ring gear. You can not use the 12 volt starter just because it has had a 6 to 12 conversion.
