450 inner brake housing removal

I would like to replace the seal while I’m doing the brakes on my 450. The manuals aren’t clear how this comes off. The exploded view makes it look like it just comes off. It wiggles by hand a bit, but gentle prying doesn’t seem to do anything. Does the top cover have to come off just to get to the pinion seal?

Pulls out but need to do it even. Has o ring inside that makes it hard to pull sometimes. Has some pry slots around edge to transmission housing. Or if tire leaves room a slide hammer in the 5/8 fine thread hole at end of bull pinion will bring it out with pinion. Can just slide bull pinion back in and check bearing on it while out.

Couple of different pry bars, or crow foot bar, large screw drivers, or whatever you can come up with. Those seal are a bugger to get out. You cannot remove that carrier without removing the bull gear. If you pry on it very hard you will break it internally. If you do need to remove it. Remove tire, take bolts out of axle end cap, remove pto, loosen bolt securing bull gear to the axle. Find a spacer that fits between the loose retainer bolt and bolt of opposite bull gear, using pipe wrench turn the axle and hold the loose bolt so as it is unthreading while turning the axle it will push the axle out of the bull gear. Once bull gear is removed from the axle you will be able to position the bull gear out away from the carrier with the seal and now you can remove that carrier. Quite a process. I would try everything possible to dig that seal out. Usually end up coming out in pieces. Good luck

That is true with an M,,but not 400,or 450.I changed the bull pinion seals in my 400D without dropping the bull gear, and other than wiggling the housing loose from the o-ring,had no problem.

Thanks. That’s what it looks like and I see the spots that look like prying areas, but it didn’t seem to want to budge. Now that I know, I will put the big bars on it and pop it off.
