DirectTV Gemeni Device

Have any of you gotten the Gemini device from DirectTV? They say it is free and they will come out and install it for Freazies. I'm just wondering what is in it for them. Why are they pushing this thing at no cost to them? There has to be something in it for them. Jut think of how much it will cost them for the huge amount of customers they have. I'm not a new customer so they are gaining nothing there.

I believe that they will charge an additional monthly fee for the use of the new box and or technology

When we got fiber internet out here in the boondocks, I immediately dropped DirecTV satellite service and went to streaming over the internet. The "Gemini Device" is their interface between fiber optic and your TV set. Comes with the subscription.

As far as I can tell, DTV streaming is totally separate from DTV Satellite. I had to cancel the satellite subscription and start a new streaming subscription. The advantages are twofold: NO weather-related dropouts and the streaming subscription (at least according to the agent) has no mandatory term and can be cancelled at any time.

A couple of years ago, I dropped Direct TV after 20+ years because I could stream You Tube TV and a couple other subscriptions for about half the cost. Then in March I got a letter from a collection service saying I owed Direct TV $328. I had contacted them by phone when I dropped them, paid my balance to that point and never saw another bill. I responded to the collection agency that I didn't owe them anything. Then on Monday, I got another notice from the collection agency saying that Direct TV insisted I owed them the money and provided 4 pages of billing. What was interesting was the billing showed that I had zeroed out my account on the exact day I canceled. This stuck out because even if you pay your bill on time, they are constantly posting charges to your account for taxes, service fees, ect, so the balance on the books is never zero. What that had done was to keep posting charges to me for two months after I dropped them but never billed me for them, and that is the basis for which they say I owe them money. I'm fighting this and have informed them that if they don't drop it and keep it off of my credit report, I will file a claim with the state AG office for fraudulent billing. I mentioned this to friend who does mortgages, and he said Direct TV is not alone in doing this. He has people who come in to get a mortgage on a house and only then find out they have been charged for services after they have dropped the service because it shows up on their credit report. People then pay the money they don't owe simply to keep the mortgage process moving because they don't have the time to successfully fight it. In short, these companies are scamming people by blackmailing them when they need to get a mortgage.

Is it on demand, or scheduled? One of the only reasons I don't want to loose DTV satellite is because we get the east and west coast feed on some of my favorite channels.
I've gotta have my MTV and that's one that we get both feeds. A lot of times, by the time I get in the house, shows I want to watch are over in the east, but air three hours later in the west. Same with Comedy Central and a few others. They just laid fiber optic here a few weeks ago and Spectrum sends me something every week wanting me to hook up. They don't give me any details, just say that it's $20 a month off for the first year. I don't know if that's just internet, or internet, phone and cable TV, but I don't want cable TV. I'm not a real big fan of on demand. We get TUBI and ny the time I figure out what I want to watch, it's time for bed.

We bought a DirecTV "package" just like you would on satellite. Totally separate from our Internet Provider (Fidium). You can select whatever package fits your needs. We'd been grandfathered in on our old satellite package and wound up having to "upgrade" to a new package to get all the channels we (she...) wanted but the price was very similar.

The only thing we "bundled" with the fiber optic company was our phone. Switched from copper landline to VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol. It's been completely transparent and WAY cheaper. Our previous landline plus DSL internet was $145 a month, fiber plus VOIP is $75.

What is it? I've got Direct and I haven't heard of it.
I'ts supposed to be a super version of the box you have now. It even has voice control on it. They have sent me a couple emails wanting me to sign up for it.

Voice control? Oh boy, that's all I need, something else in the house that keeps saying "HUH?".

We've been with DTV since 1997. You'd think they'd send me something, unless they don't know we have fiber optic available. Maybe we have to actually hook up to the fiber optic for them to start pestering me.

Every so often your DTV equipment becomes obsolete and they'll upgrade it for free. They replaced our system a few years ago. Although we were instructed to make sure our installer took our old system with him, he refused to do so and told us to throw it in the trash. Apparently that's what he would have done anyway if he'd taken the old system.

I'm wondering about the one I have in the bedroom. They didn't say anything about replacing that one.

The new systems use only a single primary receiver/DVR, which communicates wirelessly with remote units elsewhere in the house. If you don't already have the DVR capability, it's a huge improvement over basic DTV functionality. Not only can you record shows and watch them later, you can also pause and/or rewind whatever you're currently watching.

I get a lot of solicitations from cable, satellite, and streaming services.I like to study fine print, and have to actually use a magnifying glass to read it.Some of the sneakiness is almost horrifying. So far I'm not seeing anything to convince me to pay to watch a TV set.I do have a Roku that picks up off my WIFI,zero cost to me.I haven't even turned it on in well over a year.An old lady that came here to spend her last days liked to watch things like old game shows,Hopalong Cassidy,Gene Autry, and other old westerns watched it a lot.It gets a gazillion channels and still sits in her room.I still use antennas on the roof. One points toward Boston, for most channels, and a small one under it points toward Manchester N.H. for local channels.Weather does affect it some, but nothing I can't live with.

We don't have anything but over the air television. So I am not up on a lot of things. But, I do remember the "I need (want?)my MTV!" ad campaign. Is MTVstill around?

Ken
P.S. a few years ago I think the band ZZ Top said that MTV and music videos helped make them successful, because they were not good looking enough to be rock stars. 😃😀

While I've never looked seriously, there are a crapload of music stations on my free Roku.Scrolling through when I forst got it I saw a bunch of MTV stations,it was the first time I realized there were so many.I am the same way with satellite radio the way some are with their TV's.Don't matter what it costs,I'm having it.I actually have five satellite subscriptions.I pay for one for my folks,I pay for that one for their Christmas present. My wife has one, built in to her car,and I have one in a Tacoma that is built in.I also have two floater recievers also. One bounces between the shop, the cellar, and jobs with a portable boombox. The other bounces between the trucks. For some reason five costs the same as three.

Reported by who? A "reliable source"? I'm watching MTV West right now.
October 10, 2025 MTV went off the air in England and Ireland and played Video Killed the radio Star just before pulling the plug. It has since went off in France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia, and Brazil.

Video may have killed the radio star .But I believe that hip hop and rap killed MTV. No one wanted to hear that garbage so mtv turned to reality shows which brought on a further decline in viewers.

About the way people here talk about Gemini is. It's basically kicks in if the satellite signal is weak or lost and uses WiFi to stream programs. And it cost an extra $10 or so per month for each TV you have it connected to.
