Needing information on D17 series IV hubs & Spindles

Hello,
I have a question about the D17 Series IV front spindles and hubs. We have an old beater we use to stack round bales of hay and it's hard on the front end. I need to replace a rim that I have welded multiple cracks a few times and a hub that some of the threads are gone and we have to use slip through bolts and nuts. What our tractor has is the 5.5 wide x 16" 5 lug rim and I was wondering if the spindles on this would accept the 6 lug hubs so we can run 6 lug rims (which we have one in the corner that my father-in-law bought by mistake a number of years ago). I would even be open to running flotation type tires and rims on the front. Anyway, just looking to replace hubs without replacing spindles if that will work? Thanks in advance.

A series 4 should have had 6 bolt hubs one it to start with. Yes, 6 bolt will work. You need to use the bearings and races from the 5 bolt and use a 6 bolt seal as well as the 6 bolt hub cap. Just did this on my series 2.

Early Series IV had 5 bolt hubs and you can see both 5 and 6 listed in the parts book. Mine (SN 80314) has 5 bolt. Also early Series IV had different (slightly shorter) front spindles than later If you look in the parts book, the longer spindles (PN 70270044) came at SN 83273 and they were the same on the 170/175 but in that book they are listed as 10 degree? Those are no longer available from AGCO. There are 12 degree spindles (70270038) available for 170/175 and I don't know why there are two different versions - I didn't even know there were different ones until I looked just now. Those 12 degree would also fit the later Series IV.

I don't know but possibly the 6 bolt hubs were started when the spindles changed on the Series IV? I know when I did major work on my Series IV back in 2005, the new spindles I bought were too long and I had to return them. I was going to replace them both as one had the thread ruined on the end but we just had the the threaded part turned down and threaded to a smaller size and reused both. AGCO actually shows the correct early spindles (70237434) available but for $500 each! OUCH.
