AERO oil filter - what to pack it with?

The idea of the roll of toilet paper was availability. Not everyone lived close to a dealer to get new oil filters, but you could pick up a roll of toilet paper at the nearest general store.

I wouldn't use a modern toilet paper, though. 1940's toilet paper was vastly different from what we have today.

just take that goofy thing off and throw it in the garbage. that is an idea from the 30's as some tractors did not even have an oil filter. we are past the dirty thirty's . and ihc has a good oil filter on them tractors.

Back in the '50s & '60s those TP roll filters were supposedly
the best & cheapest system available. All of the car & truck
magazines & popular mechanics magazines had ads for
them.
Well, they filtered too well & took out some of the additives
in the oil that enhanced cleaning [detergents] & other add-
itives. Couple of guys found TP shreds in the oil drain pan.

I liked the ones that had a really fine mesh screen they were just a housing that came apart with one bolt. Can't remember the name of it.i used to work on a farm that has wheel lines to irrigate with and all the movers had one on the hydraulic suction line before the pump.i would take a gallon bucket and a wrench.unscrew it and wash the screen in some kerosene and put it back together.

A screen is not going to filter oil. Oil filters take out particles that the eye cannot see. Like 5 micron.

FYI, I know this thread started quite a few years ago. I'm reviving it ON PURPOSE. I also noticed that it had wandered a little bit, but that's okay.
If you've never seen one of these Aero oil filters, I took a few photos. Based out of Lincoln, Nebraska. On the photo that has only one housing, that came on a Massey Harris 44 gas tractor that I have parked in the weeds. I think all MH 44 tractors came from the factory with an oil filter. Why somebody would take off the factory filter and install this? Perhaps some farmer was selling this filter and had to set an example or maybe his next door neighbor was selling these and he had to get him off his back. On, the photo that had two filters shown, I actually have two of these filters. There is some red paint on it. Perhaps the one in my hand is from some IH application, I don't know. The filter media has about a dozen individual packets of some unknown material. I guess it's better than nothing. When this MH44 has the engine gone through, I'm actually (stupidly?) thinking about reusing the housing. I guess for no other reason than this filter was manufactured in Lincoln, Nebraska, I live less than an hour away from that city and I go to a few shows in Nebraska. If the housing DOES get reused, it will be replaced with a modern cannister filter similar to what is shown.
Anyway, this post is for your enjoyment only, I guess.
