This is actually what you're measuring, the distance from the solid line to dashed line, the actual cutting width of the share.

Not all plow widths can be determined by measuring between beams.

not for sure , but I am pretty sure you will only find the 16 inch molboard for IH plow, i put 16s on my 3-14 pull type model 60 and they worked fine

I disagree with you Ray. We had a 4-14 Case pull type plow. So can we agree one pass covered 56" But It was to big of plow in this Nicollet county Mn. black gumbo ground for the 700 Case. So Pa would cut 3" off the heel of the shares. The total cutting width of that plow was still 56"

It's been a long time since I used a moldboard plow. We used OEM "narrow cut" points/shares on our Oliver/White plows. I don't know if that's all that was available locally or what. But I remember seeing "full cut" points at some point in time. I suppose the narrow cut points pulled easier, and they left a left a little strip, which acted like a hinge which the furrow could flop over on.
I widened a 16 inch plow out to 18 inch but still used the 16 inch bottoms. It worked fine. So there was another circumstance which mimicked your situation.

It didn't cut those missing 3" it simply folded over the uncut soil left by each plowshare.
