FMJ magneto with no marking on the gear

Cleaning up a FMJ mag on a C. The small steel gear in the mag has one tooth with a small portion of one tooth ground off I assume that to be the marking. The fiber gear in the cap has no marking of any kind and I've looked it over pretty well. The mag will throw a nice hot spark to a plug off the coil but can't get anything out of a plug on a wire. Pretty sure it's a matter of timing so the spark coincides with the proper spot in the cap.

I guess the old stop and think method works. Spin till the points are about to open point rotor at terminal and assemble. Seems to throw a decent spark to a plug now. I've never had an Allis with a mag before, distributor and coil has served me well for a long time. Cap and rotor parts for the babies seem a bit pricey.

I've had some of them like that too. You'll see a little tab on the side wall where #1 should fire (with the cap off), the rotor will appear to be slightly past the contact for #1, maybe by 1/8" to 3/16" once the coupling has snapped and the points just opened. This has worked every time for me. Perhaps by now you're already fixed up.
