While working on many other things I have been eyeballing this seat and wondering how in earth did someone get it adjusted like that? Furthermore, how am I going to back the adjustment back out? Is this something I will just have to do my best to disassemble to remove it and then restore whatever I find wrong with it?

Might be a two person job. One person pulls up on the seat pan while the other person backs out adjustment screw.

Is that the situation here? It's loaded up (compressed) too far. Sort of like someone had it set too light for a heavier operator. Or did something break and cause this condition? I just don't see how it got screwed in that far in the first place, now it makes sense :) btw, how did you fare last night with the weather? We had tornado's north and south of us by just about a mile each way.

I agree with Greg that the left spring has failed, though it is usually the right that fails first. If you are going to rebuild it, understand that the vendor where we all used to get our springs closed up maybe five years ago, and the chinese replacements last but a very short time. You can get original American made durable springs from Korves Oliver. Order the ones for an Oliver 440.

What happens when you try and manually raise the seat? I'm almost thinking that the left rubber "spring" has let go internally and allowed the adjustment bolt to get into that position.
I can't stand on the axles and pull up on the seat and make it move. I took a pry bar and tried to move each side individually, the left side didn't move as much as the right. Neither moved much. From what little research I have done, I surmise the inner bushings are rusted up and it most likely needs most of the "guts". As well as rubber bushings basically a total overhaul. The outside does move ahead and back if I shove it back and forth. Seat will be the next project. I have a lot to do once the last of my parts get here tomorrow. Proper brackets for the alt. , shift knob, rewire, paint here and there, new amp gauge, fuel tank and cap, proper terminal block, (using a piece of wood block, lol).

I was able to find off the shelf bushings to rebuild my seat. The springs were a little spendy but I am now happy that I rebuilt the seat. It is by far the most comfortable tractor seat I have!

Do you plan to use the original factory shades of paint for your model? They changed in 1949, 1958, and 1963?

Sounds like something is broken and allowing the seat to severely sag. I'm south of Traverse City by about 15 miles and my wife and I hunkered down in the basement half bath for a tornado warning. Thankfully no tornado came of it, but there is lots of flood and bridge damage in Traverse City.

The adjusters on the seat on my 850 have been frozen since I got it, they get a shot of PB every time I think of it, no joy yet. The one that makes me laugh is the "Joy Rider" seat on my SMTA- I don't think anyone would name it that these days

I've been hitting mine with kroil here and there, maybe it will free up by the time I get to the seat! I was painting the engine yesterday ( too cold toay) and I was going to pull the starter so I could get behind there.....nope! half way out I decided it's NOT the time for that fight and put it back in. I need the tractor to grade the driveway and not taking chances on something going wrong right now. I'm pretty sure the "joy rider" wouldn't be an option today, lol!

They didn't paint behind the starter at the factory.

I've been wanting to raise the seat on mine as I'm 6'2". On my 8N I added a piece of 4" square tubing under the seat mount, moving it up and back a bit, helps a lot getting my size 13's up over the pedals

you are correct. I took the seat off today so I could paint the Blue, RED! I took a 3 lb hammer and tapped the end of the threads while putting pressure on the T handle. After a couple turns I could see that the right spring appeared to be the only one moving.( the side with the adjustment handle moves)

I came close....next time I will. At least it's ford red and light gray now. I need the tractor at Least every other day right now. Hopefully I will find another one reasonable that has better tires and I will do this one over :)

Dont know whether to start a new thread or continue on with this one? I have removed my seat and have all the parts "moving" (nothing is rusted in place). I have what I believe to be a simple question:
The big rubber springs are available at two places with slightly different pricing. I DON'T WANT THE ONES MADE WITH CHINESIUM. So, with only a $40 difference in price for the pair I'm looking at Steiner or Korves Oliver. Steiner is $45 less money for the pair, but ships Fast. How much are the chinese parts? I know for a fact that Korves are American made, not sure on Steiners. Can't find out before 9a.m. Monday and would like to order asap because we have rain coming and I don't want to grade the driveway sitting on a boat cushion.

Go with the ones from Korves! Top quality, I've had a set on one tractor for going on two years now with no problems. I'm a little north of 300lbs so they get a workout and I have the seat set I believe under the 250lbs marking that is stamped into the seat frame. They ship promptly also.
