John Deere 350B Injector Pump Install

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm looking for the correct procedure for the install of an injector pump on a John Deere 350B crawler loader. The machine is a 70's vintage machine, my best guess is 1972/3 ???. Any support would be appreciated. Regards Ray

Injection pump is a Roosa Master DB pump. Gear drive off front timing gears. Timing marks on drive gear front gear and gear on injection pump shaft. Take off timing window on pump, align two timing lines at marks on the flywheel. Look up timing specs for the JD 350 B engine.

Jim, thank you for your reply, have no done anything yet but will take your instructions. Regards Ray

Well, I am about ready to remove my pump on my 350b also so this is “timely”. The service manual says to but number one cylinder TDC. But how do you turn the engine over by hand to do that and how do you determine TDC on a diesel?

A flywheel rotation tool makes turning JD engines much easier. One inserts a pin in a depression in flywheel when engine is in correct time to install inj pump. https://www.ebay.com/itm/156547734406
The key is finding the right one for the engine, there are at least 4 different tools. I think his 350B engine needs the JD281A tool.

Am i correct if i get the right tool and insert the pin in the depression then that means i am at TDC on cylinder one?
Yes, but you need to confirm it is on the compression stroke; that only occurs every other revolution, the pin will fit in on every revolution.

If you have the JD technical manual for the 350B I believe your manual should tell you about this. Take the plate that is held on the side of the pump off and see if you see a notch on one plate and a second one should appear on the other plate as you turn the engine. When the two notches align you will be close to TDC compression where the pin will go in the flywheel depression. Otherwise, you can remove the rocker cover and check to see that the rockers on the #1 cylinder are both free.

I understand you are at about the same point as RJZAMISKA, however it would have been best to start your own thread. As you guys proceed you may encounter different issues at different times, replies to your questions can get mixed up and cause confusion.
