Need help! TEF ferguson

I have recently purchased a TEF ferguson. After taking it for a ride it started to lose power and then cut out. I had a full fuel tank. I replaced the oil in the engine and the filter and now it wont start at all. It turns over and smoke comes out of the exhaust but wont start. Any ideas or anyone local to ashby that might be able to lend assistance. (New to tractors and eager to learn how to maintain)

Welcome to the forums.

There are several Ashby locations in this wide world, you might want to pinpoint yours a bit better.

A couple quick checks.

Put the tractor in neutral. Pull a plug out and with the plug wire connected to the plug ground the plug to the engine block then crank the engine over with the key on do you see a spark jump between the contacts of the plug?

Pull the drain plug from the bowl of the carburetor. After the initial gush of gas after the plug is pulled, the steady flow should fill a pint jar in a couple minutes or less.

Report results.

Im near ashby-de-la-zouch in the UK. Its a diesel so no spark plug. It ran fine about 3 days ago while taking her for a ride, then slowly started losing power until finakky she wouldnt turn over. Iv replaced the oil and there was more than enough fuel for the journey. Ill attatch some photos to help show the type of ferguson if thats any help. Im not the most technical so i apologise in advance if i ask somewhat simple questions. Ĺ

Is there fuel getting to the transfer pump?
Is there fuel leaving the Transfer pump, when you crank the engine over on the starter?
Is there a BLEEDER valve...to allow air to escape from the Fuel filter when the transfer pump is activated / operating?

Sorry about mentioning an ignition system, I didn't think about the diesel version.

When was the fuel filter last replaced? Have you replaced it and it is just that the picture you posted was taken before the fuel filter change? If it has not been changed I would start with changing the filter and confirming good fuel flow as I bled the air out of the system.

On the Internet enter as per below and read:

TEF Diesel fuel injection pump Information?

This pump has several INTERNAL FILTERS....
I believe FELT PACK FILTERS???

Only the very last TEFs had a transfer pump, I've only ever seen one. The fuel usually flows under gravity. Check the fuel taps are on (there's another tap behind the filters on the reserve tank). Check for fuel at the filters - crack a banjo bolt on the inlet side then the outlet checking for fuel flow. The taps can block up as can the banjo bolts. They're not difficult to take apart and clean. If you've got fuel here crack the screw on the pipe feeding the injection pump, then the screws on the side. If you have fuel at the top and not on the side then as per the previous comment the filters inside the pump are blocked. Don't try and change these if you're not experienced, they can be a real pig to seal. I'm based in Coventry if you need help, it is very easy to take the pump off. We have our own diesel shop here.

Thank you all. It was a blockage from the fuel tank to the valve where a piece of debris had got lodged stopping fuel from entering the engine. Many thanks for your help and feedback. Also just a quick one, any change someone can tell me what type of oil i should put in for the hydraulics? Is it the same as the engine sae 40? Kind regards, ollie

Use universal tractor transmission fluid UTTO. Traditionally it would have been SUTO 10/30 or 15/30, but due to the volumes produced SUTO is bizarrely now more expensive than UTTO - just don't put UTTO in the engine. I don't know whether the American SAE oils weightings differ from UK, but our EP90 would be far too thick - I've seen a Ferguson pump blown apart from using it.

GL-1 SAE 90 is a Gear oil with an equivalent thickness of SAE 50 in engine oil. I have a British made Fergie too. It is what is called for in the manual. And I use my tractor at -20C and colder. It just takes a few extra minutes to warm up.
One of my 2 Fergies came with 10W30 Synthetic oil. I switched it back to SAE 90 because I had too many oil leaks. :)
