JD 1954 60 tractor with behlen power steering

Found a jd 60 with aftermarket behlen power steering unit on it.
tractor has set for several years inside a shed for last several years. Got the tractor started and drove around a little today. Tractor starts very hard have to go thru carb put new points and condenser in it. It would pop a few times with starter but not run so I pulled it about 10 feet and it fired off but runs very rough. Acts like out of time laboring so will check timing on it next. Power steering does not seem to work is there a trick to bleeding the system? My father had a 70 jd which had aftermarket power steering but not the behlen system it was more like a gear motor if I remember right. That was back around 1966 so my memory could be a little off. Are parts available for the behlen unit as it appears to leak oil over the years. Just getting started working on the 60 so should be a fun project.

It's probably only running on one cylinder.

Of all the 2 cylinders I own, the 60 is probably the "cold blooded" one by far! I attribute this to the automatic fuel shutoff on the sediment bowl. I always run my tractor out of fuel; this one however starts way better if you bypass shutoff first. A good cleaning of points and new plugs and I bet you'll be golden. Sorry I can't help with your steering unit!

I can't imagine that you'd have to bleed the power steering. It's open center, so the oil is flowing through it. I had one on my 60.

Tractor starts pretty good now after setting timing runs well and idles down also cleaned carb and reset a little. Also put new ac plugs in tractor. Had champions in it which i am not a big fan of.
the power steering seems to work well after topping the rectangle tank by distributor it has hydralic pump mounted behind the distributor to run the steering. The automatic fuel shutoff was eliminated at some point with regular fuel shutoff like my Olivers have. I will also be adding a electric fuel shut off like I have on my 1650 and 1655 Olivers. Now have to look into pto it has live pto and the shift lever by the transmission shifter is engaged but trying to engage pto engine lugs down and cannot get it to go overcenter even with tractor shut off. Have not tried to force it to hard with tractor running or shut off will do some research on it before I try to force it to hard. So far so good on my 750$ barn find of course it will need tires soon but one thing at a time. I have more time than money thanks for input on this project any help is appreciated.
