Sounds like one possibility may be the starter motor is constantly turning but the solenoid portion is not engaging the drive. There would have to be a cross short in the solenoid contacts to cause this or stuck in the contact position. Probably a bad unit. A photo of the connections to the starter may help us see if something is obviously wrong. Did it start this right away when you connected the battery cables the first time?

it was driven about i/2 mile parked and we tried to start no, battery was dead, replaced battery sparks flew when we connected battery termnals
the old battery was probly ok it was only 2 yrs old. i thank you for advice . i will work on it my farm is 114 miles away Don
i have not had this before

Im thinking starter soleniod is stuck and start motor is spinning... SO.. I would give the starter and solenoid a couple of wacks with a hammer to see if it frees it up... But you hear a different hum over there than the hum I hear over here. yall hear?

Sorry, too much caffine.

Try to see where the hum is comming from... If the solenoid is stuck, yes there will be lots of sparks, and the battery will soon run dead. If the starter gear is stuck engaged, The start cant turn but will hum and grow loudly. I put the tractor in hi range, hi gear and rock the back tire a inch or so in both directions, and it will usually unlock the bendix and let it return. Thus reseting the starter. good luck in spite of my advice.

Without A good DC ammeter meter one can only guess what is draining the battery. What electrical meters do you have?

i have electrical meter i think the problem is the solenoid as others are saying. i hate to buy a starter because of instalation problem and cost
i have spent a lot on the tractor already. i need to think about it.Thanks to all

Does it sound like the starter motor is turning as I mentioned? If it is running it should show power on the other large terminal of the solenoid that the battery cable is not connected to. Don’t know Fords very well, but it sounds like there might be a loader on the tractor limiting access.

Along the lines of what used red MN posted, you could unhook the cable from the relay (solenoid) that goes to the starter and see if the humming stops. If it does, that would indicate the relay was sending power to the starter. Use your test meter or a test light to see if the small terminal, with the wire from the switch, has power all the time. That would indicate the switch has gone bad. If it does not have power but the terminal the cable to the starter hooks has power the relay (solenoid) is likely bad.
