What is this ? To me it almost looks like one end of a 3 point hitch. It’s an 82 John Deere 317

Would this have been factory ? Or added on later? I know nothing about this tractor I just got it from my father in law and am going to restore it.

Hmm interesting. It has a rear PTO as well. It is a lift arm I think for a sleeve hitch. The 317 has hydraulic remotes on the front for blades and such. The adjustment plate with the holes, plus the rear pto pulleys makes me believe it's all for a tiller of some kind.

I’m excited about bringing this neglected beast back to life and put it to work on my property. I have a single bottom plow with the same type of multiple hole connection (also at my father in laws lol) would that work with this rear arm? I’m new to these machines

Also if anyone else knows what I can use the lift arm for , I’d like to hear it. Any attachments or whatnot it could used for etc.

Tiller was not factory installed.

The item with the holes is a link that raises ans lowers the tiller using the same cylinder that raises and lowers the mower deck. Holes adjust tilling depth i believe.
Mower deck has to be fastened in the raised position.
You need operators manuals! Believe tiller is model 33. Contact John Deere for manuals via dealer.

Tillers are pretty rare. You need to find the tiller that goes on your tractor since you have parts for it.

Yea I’m going to need repair and owners manuals. This thing is super cool. It’s going to be a fun project. It’s pretty crispy, but I’ve worked on worse lol I think based on the serial number it has the kt17 series 2 motor , though I haven’t been able to verify that yet.

I’ve determined it’s a model 48 mower deck , 46 inch I believe . Not in a huge hurry at the moment for a few reasons 1) were in a really bad drought so I won’t be planting grass or anything else for that matter for a few months at least. 2) I’m waiting on my workshop to be built which will be its home for the foreseeable future. I got the concrete pad down but not the building up yet , probably won’t be until June. 3) I want to take my time and do it right. I’ve done quite a bit of work on my own trucks , painted vehicles before , do my own welding etc but this is my first venture into the garden tractors and I think I’m hooked lol

they’re much much cheaper than my other hobbies haha.Classic trucks are expensive.

Would this plow work with the lifting arm and depth cam for the tiller ? I’m thinking it would?

The mechanism you have was not designed for a plow.
I have a hood, engine sideshields and fuel tank. Parts you can have.
Mower deck for $400 not shown.

Will try posting pics
I am at Ottumwa Iowa

What engine does it have? They came with a Kohler twin that was problematic. JD issued a kit to swap in an Onan.
Based on the serial number I think it has the series 2 kohler that corrected the oiling issues however I haven’t verified yet. Even if it has the series 1 not a huge issue as we have zero hills or embankments to cause an oiling issue where uneven ground caused a problem
